I have been keeping an eye open for a rebuildable cheap TH-400 to go in the GTO (Back-halved, full cage car, hoping to see the 10's with minimal spray).
Found one locally but it has the long tail shaft, from a 70's Bonneville. Have seen warnings on other posts here before about these not fitting the stock crossmember on the A-Body, but is there anything else inherently not "performance use friendly"??? Fabricating a new crossmember is no biggy and a custom driveshaft is in the plan anyway. So any other reason not to use this one as a starting point for a manual-shift/non-trans-brake performance rebuild? Will the shorter drive shaft adversely affect some angles with the pinion an such? Thanks

I've heard you can change tail shaft and tail housing to make it a short tail to fit your A-body.Just a TH400 for a big car.

if your going to have it rebuilt than have your tranny man change it over to a short tail
all you have to do is change the output shaft and the tail housing I do this alot easy to find long tails

I ran one of these with out problems in a 70 A body. Moved the crossmember back and shortened the driveshaft.

Shorter driveshafts are more stable.
So, either way Short or Long tail. HIS

We just built a th400 for a customer who had a 67 long tail trans. Nothing more than changing the output shaft & housing.

buy using the long tail yes it bolts in with no problem just slid the cross memeber back on 64 to 66 will have to drill frame for short or long tail 67 up has holes already there you will have to shorten the driveshaft I think by 3 or 4 inches have to measure lenght differnce between the trans you have in there now and the lenght of the the short tail 400 is an 1 inch longer than the 350 300 or powerglide using the 400 long tail by doing this you will also be changing the drive shaft angle

Thanks for the replies everyone!
Think I will snag this one for $50 then and switch to the short housing at time of rebuild, that way I can use my stock crossmember and keep the better pinion angle. Bruce - I will take it apart per my service manual and bring the shaft and housing over to trade you (along with that rum) when we do that other deal in the cool weather. Thanks again, John
