This may be a pretty basic question but what's the difference between an "N" crankshaft and a forged one. I noticed in the "for sale" forum Ken has an "N" crank for sale at $750 and another fellow has a 455 forged crank for $1,500.

The "N" stands for nodular iron.

I would double check the 'forged steel' crank to make sure it is in fact forged steel. F/steel 455 cranks are scarcer than rocking horse $h*t!

If your talking about the 455 stroker crank I got for sale.
It's a 455. 3.250 mains with a 2.50 offset cut for BBC rods and.......... hard chromed by Crankshaft Specialists in Tenna. Did it way back in the 90's for a combo that was never built.
Cost me $550.00 to have done, plus $50.00 to ship it back home.
Stronger then a regular N crank, but definately not a Steel crank.
But then again, depends if it's a twisted forged steel crank or not.

Kerry the real question is what are your plans. Are you going to make big HP numbers or is this to be just a street motor. Many people have used cast cranks with 700+ HP with out any issues. A forged crank is nice and it can’t hurt a thing, but will your needs require such an expensive crank in you motor?

WARPed:

Eventually, I want to build an engine with about 1,000 streetable HP and I've been talking with Dave Bisschop at SD Performance about an IA block. I've posted some questions in the Race forums before about supercharging & so on.

It's clear I'll need either a good forged crank or a billet one but right now I'm still just look'n. Gotta pay off my current engine before I start building the new one LOL!

there both good for their intended use.The std. pontiac crank if checked and preped is good. The cast Eagle cranks if checked and preped are good also.If you want std. pontiac rod and main size the stock crank is fine for limited HP.If you want a stroker crank or BBC rod size the Eagle is a better buy.IMO,Tom

thanks TOM, i was thinking the same way. my N cranks are good. i haven't gone fast since 93. not even sure which class to run yet. want to start out 10's flat NA without breaking parts & go from there. i'm still trying to relearn the math part,LOL. my ruff finish is 4.245. i'm looking at rotating assemblies available. exmample: 461-477, but thinking it would be better to go with a shorter stroke to square the engine. 3000-3500lb TA with a/t & 3.70, modified mostly stock suspension.

Not much choice for lowend cranks right now is there?
For chinese steelcranks RSB is the only ones I found available.
Eagle, Scat, Cat, Ohio seem to be out until a boat arrives and they can be machined.
