You'll get to see the car making passes at Norwalk in 2005. Don't know where it will fit in the Q16 field, as that class has been traditionally split between door cars and dragsters. It ain't a door car, and it ain't a dragster, so we'll see. And bracket racing it is comepletely out of the question. Ask Paul Spotts how difficult that is.

All ten of those cars listed in that link you posted are on nitromethane, a few of them running what is considered a "modern" tuneup. My car will be blown and only on alcohol, so there is a world of difference.

So you take a Classic Funny car On Nitro and run 227 mph with todays tires, science, etc.
How come a Funny car ran the same times in 1971 (same fuel, old technology, old valve train) according to some people and these new guys can't go any faster with all of that new tech? Hum? Tom V.

Tom, stroll thru the pits at a nostalgia race and see cars in the same class with vastly different tech while still within the rules/guidelines. The degree to which a car utilizes 30-40 yr old parts vs hitech seems directly proportional to the number of old geezers on the crew who have to resort to wheelchairs and walkers between thrashs. No joke, the older the crew the more likely to use the old stuff. They tend to look down on cars like Jack Harris runs which are typically at the top of the ladder while the old tubing struggles to make the field. Last hurrah for the old boys. " TIP THE CAN!!! "

[QUOTE] Tom: What "new tech?" Examples, please, as VRA rules are pretty strict. 1. Cars in '71 were running high 6.70s and 6.80s by full time owners/drivers. So, today's car are faster. Cars today are owned and run by guys with full time careers in other endeavors. They're not looking to rotate the earth with these cars, as they're not trying to earn a living at it, like the guys in the past had to. They're just trying to have some fun and make some noise. 2. Percentages in these cars range from 30-85%, versus the 90% and up of yesteryear. |

I know 3 Vintage Funny Cars in the bi-state area that are quicker than those guys. One of them, owned and driven by a guy with the last name of John Dunn runs very low 5's on good tracks. And he says it is "detuned" because of the cars age.

He also could not legally run these times unless the car carried a pro cert', which many of these nostalgia floppers do not, even though they have newer pipe in them. Tom, Randy Walls won the points championship this past year (2004) running a 30% combo. He wasn't "exactly" to a T where the VRA rules were concerned, but the rest of the drivers were ok with that. He ran a 3-speed vs. a 2-speed, and he ran more overdrive in the blower.
