I am doing a 4 speed conversion in my 64 GTO, currently has turbo 350. I have aquired all the parts.
64 bellhousing 70.00 centerforce flywheel 275.00 ram clutch set 120.00 arp bolts 35.00 pilot bushing 9.00 clutch pedal assy. complete 300.00 rebuilt shifter and linkage 265.00 shifter porch 35.00 shifter boot 15.00 trim ring 15.00 rebuilt M-20 650.00 show quility console 615.00 (ouch) I've got a ton of change invested in this conversion, but everthing is new or rebuilt. I was raised to do the job right the first time. my questions are, will my driveshaft work as is or will it have to be modified or replaced? And are there any mods to the crossmember. I want to have all my ducks lined up before I tackle this one. I know about welding the bellcrank tab, and having to remove the fender to do this, seems like this will be 50% of the job. |

i had a 66 with a power glide in it, swapped it out for a 350TH and then swapped it out for a muncie 4 speed, the drive shaft and crossmember worked for all 3 with no modifications.
good luck

The driveshaft length is the same for the Muncie or the Turbo350/Super Turbine 300.
I'd only recommend you have the balance on the driveshaft checked while its out and replace the U joints if they're questionable. Maybe someone can tell us what stripes are supposed to go on a 4 speed driveshaft so as to please the compulsive resto freaks among us. |

Instead of the $9 pilot bushing you should use a pilot bearing, #7109

$300 for a clutch pedal assembly? Call me the next time you need parts, won't have to bend over nearly as far.

A while ago the Legend had the specs for each year GTO in separate issues. 65 - 67 had 1 red and 1 white stripe for M11, M20, and M21 transmissions. The specs for 64 didn't include the colors for the propeller shaft(drive shaft). Probably were also 1 red and 1 white. That's what I have on mine.

The pedal assybly is brand new, including Z bar, linkage rods, piviot balls, bushings, springs, mounting tab, clutch fork, firewall and clutch fork boots, pedal pads. In my book that was not a bad deal for new, never used parts. It comes in kit form from a company called The Parts Place Inc. I did my homework on the conversion, all the parts new or rebuilt cost me around 2,000, including a show quility console. Not a bad deal considering there are people out their charging 1,500 for the same conversion with used or junk parts. Has anybody priced how much a rebuild on a Muncie is lately, or a shifter rebuild service. I will check into the bearing, who is selling it. Thanks for the input.

From where comes the console?

no, thats not bad at all. i paid 1,000 for everything i needed for my conversion off e bay, but the flywheel was showing signs of age, the muncie needed a new reverse gear and reverse idler gear as well as a rebuild and the stock center console was pretty ratty and hacked up too

Isnt that a 65-66 console?

Depends on what color you paint the inserts. I had the color matched to the heater control on the dash of my car and plan on repainting the insert on the console. 64-66 used the same console only the insert color was different in 64. Kind of a slate grey color.

The "cup" area around the shifter arm on the 64 console was not removable, 65 & 66 was. The consoles are definitely different. They will fit & function the same though. 64 consoles are harder to find in nice condition due to the cup area being broken, plus the fact that there were less made to begin with.

That was something I did not know, thanks for the info. This is a great site, very knowledgeable people. I'm new to Pontiac world, and have learned a tremendous amount of facts just from reading post on this site. I'm not building a concourse resto, just a real nice driver. I want something that I can enjoy and get a thumbs up wherever I go. I currently own a concourse restored 67 L-79 Chevelle, very rare car, but I'm hard pressed to drive it much for fear something will happen to it. Plus the fact that for every hour I drive it, I spend 2 hours detailing it and it's black with a lacquer paint job. This car gets best of show or places good wherever we show it.
