This was without the Nos!

What kind of driveshaft should I move up to?

Since the word "budget" is in there, I'd go with a 3" or 3.5" mild steel shaft (.083" wall thickness) with 1350 series U-joints. Will set you back upwards of $400.

Check and see if there is an ASSOCIATED TRUCK PARTS any where near you. I do believe they are a chain of heavy duty truck parts houses. i had a shaft made for my car out of what i was told was SPICER Super tube .187 wall with SPICER Super yokes made fron forged steel for @ $175. that was almost 8 yrs ago have not had any trouble. Prices may have gone up but if you can buy it once and forget bout it. Just may be worth the extra bucks.

We have been happy with the custom driveshafts from Hardin Drive Axle here in Austin.

Bummer about only one time trial... I know the feeling. We only made one Sunday with the budget Fairmont.

Ouch, did it take out the transmission case with it? Give Denny's Driveshafts a call!

Didn't break the Transmission.
Snapped clean in the middle.
The safety loop kept the front piece in place.

Steve, How much did they charge for your driveshaft?

I had one made for the Ventura shortly after installing the new 455 and right after blowing the stock 8.5 rear to bits. They used the HD tubing, pretty sure it is 3.5" diameter with 1350 joints. Cost about $350 with the new trans yoke. If you live near any larger cities there should be a few shops that specialize in drivetrain parts and make custom driveshafts......Cliff

ditto what he said. i twisted my stock driveshaft like a pretzel after 4 passes with the stroker engine. a local truck shop made me a heavy duty spicer shaft in one day with a new yoke and u-joints for $180.

Check the local driveshaft vendors that specialize in heavy machinery and/or big rigs.
I know around the Houston area there are plenty and those businesses can build some stout units for what you need at a "budget" price.

Brandon- honestly I don't know the cost... it's been a long time. They have made driveshafts for other cars thru the shop though, some for serious nitrous applications. I presume a call with your application and the length involved will get you price. Making driveshafts, along with steering parts, is their only business.
There is also Austin Drivetrain Inc on E. Anderson Lane at 454-1488.
