Glue or Gasket?
I need to install 3/8" valve cover spacers to the heads. I'm undecided whether to glue the spacers directly to the heads (without a gasket) or to use a gasket between the spacers and the heads. What have you guys done? Thanks.

I would use a bead of black or blue silicone.

I've always used a gasket secured by gray perma-tex between the spacer and the cylinder head.

Anyone else have experience installing a valve cover spacer?

Will you need the extra clearance provided with cork?
Silicone is hard to remove from a rough cast surface like the cylinder head. So on a head bolt re-torque or valve adjust you could make a real silicone mess. I have not used spacers but would probably glue the spacer to cover then use cork to the head. Use studs. Use a mirror to check gasket fitment. I apply a thin film of oil on the head side of the cork gasket for easy removal and can normally be re-used.

i used 3/4" spacers from RAR. i put a bead of grey RTV, put the spacers on, tightened them down overnight and then a gasket grey RTV to the VC
i run a vacuum pump on my setup and i have no issues, leaks etc... i have only seen photos of gaskets on both sides, nothing in person. sometimes it can look a little gaudy so to speak that way just be-careful, if you ever plan to run g-braces... tall VC's and spacers will cause an issue <maybe, at least for me it does>. |

I use rubber gaskets between both surfaces. Over and over.

Right now I have a gasket between the spacer/head and one between spacer/valve cover. As one of the guys commented two gaskets looks a little gaudy and out of place.
When time permits I'm going to remove the spacers and run a small bead of silicone sealer between spacer/head and do away with one of the gaskets. Looks much better to my eye. Plus 4 gaskets just doubles the chance of a "leaker"................jmho jww |
