Default What all needs to be changed for Hyd/roller cam vs ft/hyd/cam ?

What's all the parts needed to run a hyd/roller cam instead of the same old Hyd/cam ? Thanks

Valve springs are the number one.HRCs usually have more lift so that has to be addressed.Cam and lifters will be pricey.Tom

Bronze or polymer distributor gear if the cam gear is billet vs a cast iron pressed-on gear

Pushrods after measuring for them

Already mentioned valve springs

Optional - roller rockers

Maybe have to watch valve stem length, spring installed height also with the tendency for rollers to have more lift than flats for their duration.

Part of making more power.

New springs, distributor gear, rocker arms, pushrods, and don't get cheap lifters use Johnson's and they cost over $800.00 bucks

It's hard to make a kit because each application is different. Springs need to match your installed height and spring pressure needs to match your cam specs. Pushrods need to be specific also after your cam is installed you need to get a checking pushrod to determine your new pushrod length.

They've gone up.

I bought mine from Paul about a month ago and they were $1120

He just contacted me about 2 weeks ago and said his vendor for Johnson has now jacked the price to over $1600

Glad I got a set when I did. These places are going to price themselves right out of business.

Correction, I went back to look at my text from Paul. I paid $1140 a month ago and they are now $1669 for a set of Johnson's. That's if they are still in stock.

Larry - do you have any experience with the CC Evolution lifters? Wondering if that’s a more cost effective option.

Possibly need to make clearance on part of the bottom of the valley pan depending what one you have. If rebuilding the engine also consider drilling small hole (look up info) in oil passage plug to spray oil on the distributor gear.

Not just parts, you will likely need some machine work on the heads for the new/different spring setup. Of course cost of gear gaskets, intake gaskets also...

I am a big proponent of roller cams. I think they are well worth the costs.

HOWEVER, I think that is more during a full rebuild or at least a top end build. I would be less inclined to want to spend all the money or do all the work if I had a running engine.

That should make a lot of folks pass on the roller. That’s stupid expensive. Over double the cost when the development overhead has long been taken care of. I guess the market will decide if it can bear that ridiculous price jump. Gotta pay to get the best I reckon.

Everything I changed for a roller set up:

Cam (obviously)
Johnson Lifters
Pushrods (oil restricted)
Valve Springs
Polymer distributor gear
Timing chain (Sims modified)
Tomahawk valley pan to clear roller lifters
Harland Sharp roller rockers.

All said and done it was about $2300 in parts about about a year ago.

I also made sure to install the plug with the hole for oiling the distributor gear, but that’s good practice roller or not.

Like others mentioned, my heads needed machine work to get the installed height and spring pressure right so tack that on to the bill.

It’s not a cheap endeavor, but not much is with these cars. I figure cry once and be done, especially if you’re doing a full rebuild.

I plan on trying a set on the next build. They are definitely more cost effective compared to Hy-Lift Johnsons, and I like the idea the hydraulic part can be replaced as a separate unit. Also has pressurized oiling for the wheel. $700 sounds a lot better than $1669 lol With a price spread like that, as long as the Evolution lifters prove to be a good piece, and I see no reason why they wouldn't, it's hard to justify buying the Johnsons now.

Those are my thoughts too.

Building an engine these days, and doing it right with "GOOD" parts and pieces is definitely a rich mans game now. I was just telling Mike this morning how the little stuff used to nickle and dime you to death. Now it's Ulysses S. Grant and Ben Franklins

After talking to Paul he prefers (and we both agreed) to get the Johnson lifters straight from the manufacture or from a specific vendor that he trusts because some of the cheaper stuff out there is reboxed knock offs and you don't really know what you're getting. So price shopping for the cheapest stuff may get you in trouble later.

How much was the Sims mod?

I don't think this is a required mod for a roller setup, but I liked the idea of having a torrington bearing in the cam retainer plate.
