i see some cars & P/U trucks with white/blueish headlights. i am sure they changed original to this. are they really brighter from the drivers seat and what are they called?

I had a car that had been converted to HID headlights, the view from the driver's seat was quite good. If you're looking to retrofit them to an older car, there are a lot of bad kits out there that don't work very well and do a good job of dazzling oncoming drivers. Even with a good set of lights it's important to have them adjusted correctly so they don't shine in the eyes of other people in traffic.

Silverstar has an entire line of those as replacement lights. Advance Auto stocks them for most vehicles. I saw they were on sale this month.

I retrofit non HIDs to true HID projector headlights.
None of these will pass DOT so unless youre car came with them, they technically arent legal.The difference in brightness is like night and day.
Silverstars arent even close.Do everyone a favor and dont buy the cheap azz "kits" with just bulbs and ballasts. The color is dependent on the "K" (Kelvin) rating, the higher the rating the whiter it is,then after 4300 it turns to blue then purple at around 10K.

I just picked up a 2005 GMC Sierra work truck that had these HIDs installed by one of the previous owners. Great light if you're the driver of the truck, obnoxious light if you're the poor sap coming the other way. Not to mention, it causes many oncoming drivers to high-beam you in retaliation.

I turned them on and stood in front of the truck in my driveway one night...and they were blinding!

Decided to take them off and go back to stock. Very simple to unplug and reconnect the factory stuff.

should have a nice crisp cutoff with a flare on the right side for street signs

The reason that a retrofit is not legal, is that these ultra powerful lighting systems must have an auto levelling system from the factory. Like in my BMW. I can see it working every time that I start the car. It keeps the blinding light down and out of oncoming driver's eyes. Especially when stepping on the gas, hitting a bump, or going up a grade.

not all have auto leveling from factory. I have some from a later XLR that even has active steering but they dont have auto leveling(2006+)
DOT headlight lens will have the proper bulb designator imprinted on it.
Those that I pictured were all Caddy projectors, low beam was a bi-xenon
and I added the low bean xenon in the high beam location mainly for looks.
These really kick azz when the high beam shutter is opened.
