Default Dipstick is bone dry

After 6 qt. oil change with filter, dipstick comes out dry. Car in question is '69 base motor auto w/A/C. Hopefully just wrong dipstick. It measures 31 and 3/8 inches including handle. Thanks

Standard AC dipstick is should be 28 1/2" from the bottom of the "bell" at the handle to the end of the tip.

Lower dipstick tube not installed or possibly came loose and fell into the pan, causing an erroneous reading?

Thanks. Looks like I have the right dipstick. Tubes must've been installed incorrectly.

Has it always been that way?
(bone dry when full)

If the tube somehow came loose in pan, the dip stick would usually hit the crank.
(and be broken off)

Since this is an AC (?) car, probably the upper tube is coming out of the lower block tube.

Look at the juncture to see if you can tell if it is coming out.
(usually behind exhaust manifold area, so may be hard to see)

Upper tube extension would also be pretty "wiggly" if it's coming out of the lower tube.

Thanks. I have a feeling the tube was not properly installed from the inside. Probably just sitting on top held in place by the bracket.
