Default A Win !

Completely missed this win by a Pontiac powered Stocker.

Just saw it, on the Line Performance FB page.

" Congratulations to Brad Koivisto on his win today in Stock/Super Stock at BIR!..."

So, a belated congrats to Brad Koivisto, for his Stock/SS combo race win !

I've noticed that several quick Pontiacs run P&M engines. And some have Heads-Up do their heads.

I remember reading that Bill Rink & Mike Morgan has used P&M for years. Can anybody name other currently active Pontiac powered class racers who run P&M engines ?

IIRC, Brad Kiovisto uses Line Performance. I think Ronald prince does, too. Both cars have run in the 10's.

There are now quite a few Pontiac powered Stockers that have run in the 10's. Would be interesting to know who built all those 10 sec Stocker engines.

These Stockers are running quicker than the Super Stockers were running back in the '70's, when we were racing Stock.

One example is: In '77, the H-O Racing Specialties SD455 '74 T/A set the SS/KA record, @ 11.31.

LOTS of Pontiac powered Stockers have gone quicker than that. Of course, the changes in Stock rules have allowed much of that.
Parsons and Myers engines has been my home engine shop for 35 years. It was a 2 man operation at it's peak, now a 1 man operation. Colin Myers, "Hot Rod", had to retire about a year and a half ago for health reasons. Bruce Parsons continues as the owner of the shop. For a tiny operation, they have a sterling reputation for quality and winning builds in Stock and Super Stock. Also Comp Eliminator and even top fuel for Pat Dakin from time to time. So dominant for a tiny shop that they were awarded the "Perfectly Strange" award from Strange Engineering about a decade ago for having a ridiculous number of top qualifiers in the US Nationals in Stock and Super Stock. Something like 12 of the top 20 in each Class. It was crazy. I can get a list of Pontiac customers from Bruce in a day or two. I see them every week or so. Old school all the way. Winners with Pontiac, Mopars, Ford and even the lowly Chevies.

Great engine builders are just that, same is true with head porters. Regardless of the engine brand!
Dave Layer RIP (Heads Up) was one of the best. A Canadian racer here set 5 NHRA records with his self-built BBC engines and Heads Up worked heads.
Funny how some think only "Pontiac specific" people can work their stuff. Nope.

Dave Layer was one of the very best indeed and a very nice, humble person. I learned allot from him over the years. It was a real blessing having his shop so close to home. He was one of the first to have a CNC program to port Wenzler heads way back in the day. Randy, who worked with him for many years continues to operate in the area under the "Heads UP" name he purchased the business after Dave's passing.

Arnold Hines use to have a shop that did race engines. In Indiana. Forget the town.He did Bob Michael's 73 SD Superstocker back in the day. He did my SD also. Lloyd Robinsons stocker and SS Pontiacs also were done what I can remember. He might have worked at another shop before he went on his own. Not sure how long he was in business.

J.B. Clegg had driven both the Clegg SD455 SS Birds into the mid 9's. Keri Angeles has driven their '69 SS Bird into the 9.80's, at least.

So, question for you guys. NOT counting the GT cars, has any other Pontiac powered Super Stock car ever dipped into the 9's ?

I don't think so. But I could be wrong. Anyhow, I think this is very odd. Why do I say that ?

I think there have been several legal Pontiac Stockers run down into the 10.30's. These are five I think have run that quick: John Schloe '69 Bird, Randi Lyn '67 Bird, Bob Aceves '68 Bird, Leo Glasbrenner '68 Bird, & Chris Stephenson '68 Bird.

And, Scott Burton ran into the 10-teens with his RAIV '70 Bird. I think it was Norman Warling who posted here that Scott actually did run a high 9, but not in Stock elim competition.

So, with just my common logic, it would seem that with all the things Super Stockers are allowed to do, it shouldn't be too difficult to make a Stocker 3 to 4 tenths quicker.

(1) Any size Roller cam with roller lifters

(2) Tranny brake

(3) Lighter pistons/ thinner rings

(4) Alum single plane intake

(5) Limited MILD head porting ?

(6) Big tires

(7) Modified rear suspension system, such as ladder bars, 4-link, or ???

In my mind, all these things add up to nearly a half sec improvement. Am I wrong about this ?

There have been several GT cars run in the 9's, with Pontiac 400 power. The SS engine rules are the same, whether the engine is in a GT car or a reg SS car.

So, why have there not been more 9 sec Pontiac powered (NON-GT) Super Stockers ?
You missed one, I went 10.37 @128.66 at Gainesville last year for the class combo win.

A Hines Racing Engines, originally located in Lawrenceburg, IN. Colin Myers, of Parsons and Myers worked there for many years during their heyday, before starting Parsons and Myers. I always loved their byline slogan, "Where winning is a habit, not an accident". They had a good reputation for a while. Shop is no longer operating.

Thanks for that info ! I may have missed others, also.

With all your experience, given the changes you could make by switching to SS, do you think you could easily get into the high 9's ?

If not, how close do you think you could get ?

Have any other Pontiac powered reg SS cars got into the 9's, besides the Clegg cars & the Angeles '69 Bird ?

Could take one of the Stocker motors add some ported heads, an intake, roller cam and a better oil pan,I think nines would be doable on a good day. Might take a little bit to figure out the clutch.

Default Houston Make-up Race ?

I suppose this was a make-up race for the race(or finish of the race) that was supposed to be in Houston, earlier in the year, maybe ?

Anyhow, in qualifying, J.B. Clegg was #4 in SS, with a 9.62, in the Clegg SD455 '73 Bird.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop

The Mission Garage '74 T/A Stocker was #16, with an 11.416.

Default TX Nats

The Mission Garage Stocker was #22 in Q-1.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop

J.B. Clegg was #8 in SS Q-1, with a 9.663.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop

Noticed that Greg Stanfield was #1 in SS Q-1. Can't see that name without thinkin back to the '70's, when we'd see his Dad, Howard, at the Hallsville TX track. Greg may have been driving some then. TJ just said she thinks maybe he was driving some, but didn't have his drivers license yet. I don't remember. IIRC, they were racing a white Chevelle wagon Stocker, at the time.

Anyhow, Mr. Howard always came by to say hi & ask how our cars were running. He was a real gentleman. IIRC, he was a retired military man & was a school teacher when we knew him. I'm guessing that he probably raised Greg to be a nice guy & a gentleman, too. And Greg probably did the same for his son. That family has always been strong competitive racers, & nice guys to boot.

I wonder how many of us will have nice things said about us, after we're gone ?

Just thought of this to add. Bobby Brannon was also at some of those Halsville races. He was #1 on today's Stock Q-1 list. I think he was good friends with the Stanfields. They all lived in the Shreveport LA area, & still do. Don't remember a lot about him except his name. I think he was racing a '69 Camaro Stocker, at that time, but not sure, at all.

Great to see that they're still racin, after all these years. Must be nice to do what you love to do, all your life !
