Default 15 X 8 wheels for 65-67 GTO

Will a 15 X 8 wheel with 41/2" backspacing fit on 65-67 GTO's without wheel rub or other problems? This would be for the rear. I am concerned about the 8" width.

Would use 235-15 tires.

Thanks,
Al

A 235/15 (whether it's a 60, 70 or 75 series) should be rub free on the rear end with a 15x8 iwth 4.5" BS. 235/60's would be quite short.

275/60/15 on 15x8 Rallye I with 5" BS on '66 GTO - no rubbing unless you put 3 adults in the back seat.

If you are going to run 235/60 you can actually use a 15x7 with 4.5"BS.. 15x8 might be too wide of a rim for that size tire..

Do you have any pics of that setup?

275/60R15s on 8" Cragars with 4 1/2" bs rubbed on my 66 GTO. I now have a set of BFG 255/60R15 T/As on the same rims and no rubbing.

Didn't the 65 come with the narrower diff, and 66-67 use the 1 inch wider rear diff?? If so the backspace would need to be different for each. My 64 uses the 15x8 with 4.5 backspace and a 255/70/15 rear tire.

My understanding is '64 - 66 are the same. 1967 it was widened by 1".

But as we all know, it's very possible that the rear ends have been changed on many of the '64 - 66's. I know my '64 had a '68 3.23 in it when I bought it.

I've since replaced it with a 12 bolt the same width as the '67 on up.

I run 255/60/15's on 15x7's with 4.25" BS. I would not be able to run those tires with 15x8's with 4.5" BS - would have to have 4.75. If I had an original width rear end, I would have plenty of room.

Actually mid-1966 production run was the change to the additional inch.

There are enough variables that it makes sense to always measure!
