Strange rear wheelwell trim on '67
looking for some insight on the wheelwell trim i have in the rear of my '67 GTO. i'm currently looking to go with wider rims/tires front and rear, as i like the look of a fulled out fender. in looking at the clearance in the rear, i noticed the wheelwell trim was rather deep (wide) and extended well beyond the fender mount points. they are also additional/previously used mount holes inward of the current mount holes. the interesting thing is the contour of the trim fit the wheelwell perfectly and appears correct. any thoughts on why the trim is so deep and why the need for the inner mount holes? would these possibly fit another car - lemans possibly with a different fender depth?
second part of this question - since they are so deep (inward), they will potentially create tolerance issues with rims/tires that attempt to fill the wheelwells. since they fit so well around the outer contour, i'm just thinking of trimming the trim piece down and contour it more to the fender shape and creating more room. any reason not to do this?? i could buy new trim, but these fit perfectly, so why mess with a new set. thoughts on both issues?

I had the same issue and just trimmed the moldings to be the same width as the fender lip. No reason not to, and no problems.

You're lucky it's just the wheel well trim. On my 66 the qtr panel fender lip was wider by 3/8ths of an inch than the trim. I took a grinder to it and got rid of the excess up to the trim.

thanks for the responses! it still just seems odd to me that trim like this would possibly have 2/multiple applications and the dual set of holes, although they are clearly there for some reason. as suggested, they will be trimmed down to allow sufficient clearance for 15x8s with a healthy backspace.

Sometimes the holes in the quarter panel get stripped or rusted out & new hole placement is needed for re-mounting. I have some wheel-well stainless pieces that have second mounting holes in new spots for this reason. Jerry.
