If they could figure out a way to make them without a big visible seam like this one has at the 6:00 position, it would be a nice alternative.

Seam? this guys ad is so dark you cant even tell if the brushed aluminum has been painted or not ?
I think they all have a seam its part of the process however the originals are further to the backside of the wheel instead of the very outside (middle) diameter.

Not sure if this one was done by the same lady as mine, but it looks to be.

I had a rather poor looking thin style wheel wrapped in leather by a woman who had an eBay auction for that service. I supplied the wheel, and she wrapped it and painted it for less than $200.00. She also added a layer of foam to make it about the same diameter as a fat wheel.

It looks and feels really good, and I am very pleased with it.

Haven't seen her on eBay lately, but then again I haven't been looking. If anyone is ineterested in that service, let me know and I will see if I can track down an email address or phone number for you.

I agree as well.
Man, that seam sure does kill it though...

I have one of that "ladys" leather covered wheels. If you aren't worried about originallity, they are great. I decided I was more interested in originallity so I am not using mine. SHe charges $180 plus you have to supply the wheel. If anyone wnats it they can have it for $150 shipped. It is brand new condition, never used soince she wrapped it. It also has the pad to make it the 1.175"-1.25" thick wheel.Just PM me if you want it..

Default Fat Wrap Formula Wheels

Early (70-71) fat wrap formula wheels are in fact coded. The code is on the back of the 6:00 spoke cover and is IC, ICX, or large font inverted IC as tadavidl will attest to. Another indentifying feature on the early fat wrap wheels is what I call the distinct "race track" mold mark pattern on the backside of the wheel. If you have a single mold pattern on the outer edge of the wheel, you could have a 76 wheel instead of a 70-71 IC wheel. I seem to have lost the ability to upload pics, but tadvidl or Norwood might have my pics on file; we have discussed this in detail on this and other forums.

I think it was the 1980 Indy Pace Car editions that had grey leather-wrapped wheels from the factory. They had a vertical stitch seam at the 6 o'clock position as well. I've got a used original in my basement. It's not bad looking really, but I too prefer the original foam versions.

I have two of the thicker wheels, that have the mold ring on the back side, not on the outer edge, and neither have the markings you are discussing.Actually...I have a total of 4. One on my 70, two that I am thinking(have tried) about restoring. And one more that is boxed up that is absolutely new looking.. You have perked my interest,I am going to have to go look at these again..I know without a doubt they all have the mold seam on the back side, not on the leading edge, but I have never seen any other markings on teh ones I have??...

I had mentioned in another Formula wheel thread last week that only the early ones ('70-'72) have the "IC" stamp. The '73 on up thick wheels do not have the stamp and seem a bit softer to me than the '70-'72 wheels. I am not sure when the molded seam went away.

Thanks for the clarification.I had looked at mine and they all are the thick versions, with the double seam on the bottom. None had the stamping. Although 3 were the shofter ones, one is almost rock hard and none have the numbers. No biggie, just on of the items i hadn't paid close attention to yet.. Thanks for the info...

I've got 2 of these wheels and they both have the "IC' along with the mold dot on that spoke.

My original 1971 T/A wheel has the "IC" code on it. Built in May of 1971 at Norwood.

I have 4 of them. Three are off '71s and have a small "IC" stamp. The fourth is off of a '70 and has a larger "IC" stamp. Two are rough and two are probably restorable. Hopefully at least one will turn out nice since I need it for my TA.
