Default Aluminum head ??

I was looking around the internet today and saw that the Wenzler website has a pretty good deal on the Super Chiefs...

First question- I've been out of the Pontiac world for about 6 years, just stepping back in now. So why are the heads so cheap?

I had Wenzler 2's on my old 455 and never had any real problems with them. Im thinking about ordering a set of the SC's. Any negatives?

Thanks!!

Be sure you add up the TOTAL cost to run them before you let the price of the bare heads influence you - including a set of one-off custom headers. Depending on what you already have to start with and planed power level you may want to look at CV-1's or KRE HP's too or even Tigers if your wallet can stand them..

My father has a set of Super Chiefs and after a lot of porting it is a nice head.

What are your goals and tell us more about the car it's going in and we can help you better.

I run Superchiefs on my car, but they've had a boatload of work done on them, both before I bought them and since.

If you're interested in high performance heads, check for used ones as well as new. Sometimes there are some pretty good deals on used heads of different brands up here in the Performance parts for sale section.

68 Firebird, building it as a grudge car, maybe some 8.60 index racing. I was thinking 440ish stroker kit. Turbo or centrifugal- although I've always wanted a roots blower. Going to keep the backseat in it so I can take the kids down for ice cream on Saturdays...

With boost you don't need a high dollar custom head, give Rodney Butler a call.

Wink

A set of 340 cfm E-head without the pushrods moved can get you into the 7's boosted.
The bottom end requires the money spent.

With better flowing heads the less boost you,ll need to make a given amount of horse power! Super Chiefs will require new headers where KRE HP or Tigers won't. Of course you will probable need bigger tube headers anyway.

That is probably his best choice for what he wants to do.

Ok, guess the next question is- at what boost level do you need an aftermarket block? I've got a .040 400 block that is half filled. I was thinking about using that, putting a 4.25" crank in it, with good heads and not turning up the boost too much.

Last engine I built was a 496bbc with AFR 325 heads, 10-1 engine with a F2 and we made 1100hp. Engine didnt work too hard and neither did the F2. That's kinda my goal with this build. Nothing works too hard and everything lives a nice happy life...lol

700-800HP is about it. There will be racers saying a factory block will take more BUT WHEN IT BREAKS they won't reimburse you!

back to the head, if starting from scratch i would hunt for a head with the thickest deck, then consider past issue history with cooling between the two center cyls if you are going eiieeiie.

To run 8.60's it will take about 7 lbs of boost at 3200lbs or so ...........about 900-950 horse power.

check your math. More like 980-1000 hp. 900 will get 3200 nowhere near 8.60 to index race he would need to be 1080-1100 to have a little cushion.

You "could" do it with IRON heads if you want. Any aluminum head would do it. really recommend an aftermarket block.

Mike,
I was at work and the numbers were off the top of my head. I'm thinking your numbers are a a lot more off then mine. So riddle me this, how much HP was I making at Norwalk to run 8.15 at 3,125 lbs.?
