Default T400 teardown

I tore into my T400 for a routine physical today and found this. Also found the case saver ring in several pieces as well as the retainer ring that holds the intermediate clutch spring retainer. And idears?

Driveshaft take the plunge forward?

I'd be spoiling for a different case, differnt Center Support, maybe the Direct Drum. Take a careful look at all wear patterns. Curious to know if the Center Support bushing is like new, super-tight, or so wrom the sun shaft rattles in the bushing.

So, this is what I found. Some wear on the center support. But the only evidence of it hitting anything was the snap ring that holds the intermediate retainer was broken. The center support bushing is a little loose. Ext housing bushing is more worn than normal, but not bad. Yoke definitely didn’t hit anything. The case bushing that fell out is a lot wider than a typical stock application . Maybe from a different application to support the rear Torrington conversion? I typically drive the bushing a little further forward to do this.
There is no damage to the case. So, I think I will replace the center support, the needed bushings and carry on.

Not experienced with the cause of that failure.

WAG; Off-center rotating assy in DRIVE put all the imbalance loads on the C-Support so something had to give?

Wears CLIFF?

Sonnax case saver bushing is not compatible with the traditional rear Torrington bearing upgrade where a th350 front pump bearing is used. Is that what yours was?

No mine is just the Torrington and a .015 shim. The "case saver" I was referring to is the large ring that fits under the Center Support.

Some TH400's used a ring/shim under the center support. Check the long bearing inside the center support. They are soft babbit and not uncommon to find they all pitted out. Was the hollow retaining bolt for the center support loose or broken? Seems like a busted up center support shim would indicate it's moving around some.

Never heard of or seen a retaining ring for that clutch piston have an issue, so can't help out there......Cliff

I buzzed the CC bolt out with my cordless impact so I'm not 100% sure how tight it was. I was advised to use loctite on the case bushing which I have never had to do. I did put a new case bushing in and it felt normal going in. So, with that, suggestions are very much appreciated and I'm moving forward.

I always use Loctite Red on the case bush and stake it through the oil grooves in two spots, I do the same with the extension housing bush.
Heavy tow vehicles are what I find loose or beat up case bushes in, only very occasionally though.
Never come across a broken centre support spacer ring.
