Default Two Questions

Question Number 1:
What color stripes would have come on a 71 A Body in Lucerne Blue, with the D98 option selected?

Question Number 2:
On a 71 Lemans with the T41 Endura option would the grill inserts be different than those on a 71 GTO? (Say, square plastic grid versus a woven wire mesh?)

Trying to resolve some questions based on some photos I've seen.

Thanks,
BJ

BJ,
My Tropical Lime GT37 had red/black stripes. The Black GTO at Norwalk has red/white stripes.I havnt found any charts for the D98 stripes like there are for the Judges.

My Lemans Sport is an endura bumper car.The grills are the square grid.

Thanks Craig - I knew the D98 stripes were only offered in Red/White or Red/Black - just curious which would have been used on Lucy Blue or if it was customer's choice when ordered.

On the grills, I always thought the 71 grills were the same on LeMans with T41 and GTO, (both wire mesh) but then have lately seen a few photos of the T41 LeMans with the square plastic grid (like the 72 but not recessed). Learned something new...again!

Thanks,
BJ

Hey BJ -

I have the 1972 PMD stripe colors chart, but alas no 1971 chart. I'm betting heavily upon the Red/White D98 stripe for a Lucy Blue '71 however.

And like you and Craig have stated, the '71 T41 LeMans came with plastic square patterned grilles, appearance not unlike the 1971 chrome-nosed LeMans' used. Might have a pic somewhere . . .

Thanks Lloyd. I'd love to see a Lucy Blue 71 with those stripes on it. Bet that would have looked quite patriotic!

Adriatic Blue is a beautiful color also. Got any photos you can share?

Overuld, when was your '71 built? Is it early or late stripe design? The design was changed in the Feb-Apr (about the same time The Judge option was dropped) time frame. You will need to decide if you've got the eyebrow (early) or sword (late) style stripe.

It is possible that very early '71s received The Judge style stripes. The '71 dealer album, page Q4, has a chart that indicates that all '71 A-bodies received the same tri-color eyebrow stripping as was applied to The Judge. I would have to guess that the decision to release the two-color eyebrow stripe for every application except The Judge was made after the albums were printed and before production began in late 1970.

The 1975 PMD Illustration Catalog lists the second style two-color eyebrow stripe, but doesn't specify an application.

The 1971 assembly manual shows specific tri-color eyebrow stripes for WT1 GTOs, two-color stripes for all non-WT1 GTOs and other a-bodies, and also shows the sword stripe for all late non-GTO cars.

What I'm not clear on is, were the eyebrow stripes dropped completely after The Judge was discontinued? Did all A-bodies built after March receive the sword-style stripes, or were the GTOs still delivered with the two-color stripes?

My car was built 09C (September) but went through the strike and didn't ship until December. But, my interest is not in reference to my car which was not built with any stripes at all. (Judge package was added by a previous owner). I was just curious as to what color D98 stripes a Lucy Blue non-Judge A-Body would have. I know the Lucy Blue Judges got the pinky stripes which look awesome.

I guess the best answer came from Tim. Red and White stripes.

But, I'm still curious if the late-year GTOs got the sword stripes, or if they continued with the eyebrow stripes.

This is a very good question, did they kill the D-98 option on GTO's at this point or did they continue using the left over two color stripes? I would think if there was a 71 GTO out there with factory sword stripes it would have surfaced by now but who knows.

Someplace I have a pic of the front fenders of my GT-37 where you can see the red and white stripes folded into the fender lip, I will track it down and post it. I don't like admitting how long I have had that car since its still unfinished but I have many years researching the stripes, including exchanging snail mail with Jon Sawruk on the subject on a few occasions, mostly because the car had none on it when I bought it...it was a few years before I found the remains of the stripes on the fenders inner edge. Obviously there is never and absolute but i don't believe you were allowed to pick your stripe color, most of the colors combos I have seen over the years followed the same pattern, Lucern /red and white, Nordic silver/red and black, Aztec gold /red and white, castillian bronze / red and white and so on.... I have not seen a car of every 71 color with stripes but fairly close.

Eric, I would need to go home and look (work today) but if i remember right my GT-37 was built as late as April and still had the eyebrow stripes....I will check and let you know. Years ago I took parts from a Nordic silver 71 GTO that had red and black two color stripes on it (the pic of the fender is everywhere on the net) I wish I could tell you when that car was built but unfortunately I didn't look much at that stuff back then, it kills me because I would really like to know today.

Tim, I agree. I have never seen a '71 GTO with the sword-style side stripes. But stranger things have happened in this hobby.

Anyone have a photo of a Lucerne Blue or Adriatic Blue A-Body with the Red/White stripes?

Dan Jensen's T-37 with the stripes is an April built car from Pontiac, MI plant.
