Nice piece, I really like the Factory grips. I need a set for a 15-2 VH.

The new Pythons had some early production problems (mainly fit and finish). I still prefer the older models. Then again, my favorite wheel gun is my late 1970s S&W Model 19 that was "tuned" by my late uncle. The trigger pull is about 3lbs in double action.

Thanks! Those aren't factory grips. I bought them here: http://lbcustomgrips.com/ They were only like $65. I thought that was a steal! I also added a fiber optic front sight.

Thanks for the information on your source. I agree, that is a great price. The "DW" insignia had me thinking they were a rare factory offering. Those are the only wood Dan Wesson grips I've seen with the finger grooves. Mine has Pachmyers on it now.

Edit: Great site and vendor, I will be ordering from them. To the O.P., Those Pythons live up to their fine reputation, you did well.

I paid a little more for the insignia I seem to recall. Worth it though! I had mine made in back walnut. There are a bunch of options for wood, finish, etc. It's a shame that they don't make grips for more brands!

Yep, tough to beat a well set up model 19 S & W if you use a wheel gun for self defense. I've owned a few 357's over the years including a Colt Trooper 4" barrel, an early model 19 S & W 4" barrel, and a S & W 686 6" barrel. The 686 was used for hunting but replaced with a 629 which I still have today.

I've never owned a Colt Python, mostly because they were always quite a bit more expensive that other brands, but for sure they are at the top of the pile in that market.........

Back in 70's my Dad's buddy bought a brand new Python. He had a trigger job done on it and some other mods. The three of us went to the range. We all shot the Python and the Dan Wesson. We all held better groups with the Dan Wesson. My Dad's buddy wasn't too happy. lol Not bashing Pythons. Just one case study. My friends father-in-law had a heavy barrel 8" Dan Wesson and it didn't shoot as well as my Dad's gun either. I think he just got one made on the right day.

Colt pythons are nice. I also have a nice dan wesson .357 with a few different barrel lengths.

If you plan to carry the revolver for protection, handle as many as you can. See what fits your hand (yes grips can be changed also) but as with any pistol, it should feel like an extension of your arm when you pick it up, forming a straight line from your elbow to the tip of the barrel. If you have to adjust it, it doesnt fit. This can be changed some with grip changes. Also grip angles are different. This factors in also.

Don’t get hung up on name brand unless you just want to say “i carry a xxxx”

Find something that fits you and is reliable

I have owed and shot a colt Python. 4" barrel , royal blue finish. Best revolver I have ever shot and the most regretted trade I have ever made since trading it for another gun. So with that in mind, I have come to the conclusion that after buying a gun, any gun, I will never sell or trade it. this has proven to be a great investment strategy with no more regrets.

Have any of you ever owned one and/or shot one and what are your thoughts?

I have a huge surplus of 38 special ammo and I need something to shoot it so I’m considering getting one.
If the gun is chambered for .38 Special, its a Diamondback.
If the gun is chambered for .357 Magnum, its a Python.

Python is one of the best guns Colt ever made.
Used models still command a high price on the used market.
If you can afford it and it looks like something you want, you'll be hard pressed to find a better revolver.

WE ARE HERE TO HELP.

We are here to help!

gunaholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from gun addiction.
Gun-addiction screening:
1 *Do you own more than 3 guns?
2 Do you own more than 5 guns?
3 Do you own more than 10 guns?
4 Do you feel suspicious of people in general, or uncomfortable around people who don’t own guns?
5 Have you ever thought of brandishing a gun to end an argument or confrontation?
6 Do you spend more than 5 hours a week on gun forums or reading about guns on the internet?
7 Do you stock pile more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition?
8 Do you feel your unsafe when you’re not carrying a gun?
9 Have you purchased guns for family members or loved ones even if they did not want one?
10 Do you always have to have the ‘latest’ in new gun technology?
11 Have you ever left a loaded and unlocked gun around you home or vehicle, just in case?
12 Do you spend more than $5,000/year on guns and ammunition?
*
If you answered ‘yes’ to 4 or more of these questions, you may have a gun addiction and pose a threat to your family or neighbors. The nearest chapter of GunAholics Anonymous (GAA), a 12-step program for helping gun addicts face their addictions can help.
GAA*is not a religious organization nor is it affiliated with any religious body. It welcomes members of all religions, agnostics and atheists alike. You don’t have to sign up or achieve anything to be a member. You’re a member of a group if you choose to be. You can come and go as you please. No one is “in charge” of a group. We work through the offer of help and suggestion only. No one can tell you what you should or shouldn’t do.

Whomever started that group doesn't know the difference between an addiction and being pragmatic.

Now I'm waiting for the Caraholic fellowship:

1. Do you own more than 1 car?
2. 5 cars?
3. 10 cars? Would you like to own more than 10 cars?
4. Do you feel suspicious when you see people getting close to your car? Are you suspicious of people that don't own a car?
5. Have you ever thought of racing someone with another car to end an argument?
6. Do you spend more than 5 hours on car forums or reading about cars on the internet?
7. Do you stockpile car parts that you don't need right away?
8. Do you feel bored when not thinkng about cars?
9. Have you purchased a car for family members or loved ones even if they did not want one?
10. Do you always have to have the ‘latest’ in new car or parts technology?
11. Have you ever left a set of keys around your home, just in case you wanted to go for a drive?
12. Do you spend more than $5,000/year on cars and parts?

Boy, I need help.

I've had lots of Pythons. The new ones look great. I have the 4 1/2". The trigger is the worst EVER. The older pythons had smoother actions and way better triggers. Cool guns, but I really prefer the ones from the 70's or earlier. Build quality is way better. Colts rule!

I've heard the current offerings from Colt leave a lot to be desired, so your comments aren't too surprising to me.

Not much into handguns myself but I prefer a semi-auto pistol compared to a revolver. I feel like a semi-auto allows a person to stay on target easier depending on barrel length of a revolver of course. A friend of mine has all kinds of rifles and pistols. I tell him all the time, why so many weapons you only have two hands.
