Default Holley Sniper efi

So I sent back the FAST system without even opening the box and bought the Sniper instead. Everybody says the tech support and customer service is much better with the Holley. I'm thinking that will make a big difference when I get into this thing.
So is anybody here using the Sniper?

Will the Sniper control timing if I have a ready to run MSD distributor?

No you have to have a Hall effect distributor. Holley makes one for Pontiacs it's 449 dollars at summit. I just bought one

That's what I thought. It's the Dual sync distributor. I see no need right now but it's nice to know I could add it later if I think it might make any kind of difference.
Still wish there was someone already running one that I could pick their brain for info when I get this thing going.

Im curious how this works out for you. Our combinations are really similar. I was actually planning on having SMI build me an 800 cfm QJet here in a few weeks. But your going away from that. Makes me nervous lol. Right now I have a known good 4150 taht got me up and running, has served its purpose but I want something more tailored to my combination.

My only problem with one of these kits is I already spent the money to have 1/2 fuel feed line put in, and a Robb MC pickup/Fuel pump. I feel like all that is wasted if I now go injection.

Can you use the cam sensor made by Luhn?

Reading the Sniper instructions, it states you can use a locked out MSD distributor. No hall effect required.

I read that just yesterday. Seem like the more I read about his system the more things it does.
I have bought so much stuff that I will be taking off and putting on the shelf it's not even funny. Wish I had thought about buying this a long time ago. Could've saved a bunch of dough setting up my fuel system, timing, carb work, fan triggers and probably more stuff I haven't even thought of yet. It's basically a computer controlled carb with visual feedback. Kind of a carb tuning for dummies but it has other abilities that are pretty cool and might come in handy. in he end I probably spent more on all this stuff than I did on the EFI but that's what happens when new tech is just hitting the market. Yeah that's me Mr. Cutting Edge, lol.( I can't even find my own phone number on my cell. I am in so much trouble)

Doesn't appear that they released the 8 injector model yet?

No 8 injector model yet that I'm aware of, but there are ways the 4 injector stuff will support more than the 'rated' 600hp. Cranking the fuel PSI is one of them.

Holley is funny about the distributors they recommend/support, and odd that they don't directly support mag pickup setups (especially now that they own MSD). I was confused when I had to use the dual-sync in a sequential mode to get timing support with the Terminator setup. But oh well, it's totally worth it.

Holley support is great for their' EFI stuff. I wish they were a little more responsive by phone, most of the support comes from the forums, but the moderators respond very quickly on the forums.

No worries about leftover parts, you can sell/ebay them, recoop some of the cost of the switch.

I think it is possible to use the Luhn cam sensor and a crank trigger, but it takes some programming, and not sure the Sniper ECU will accept all the same parameters the HP/Dominator ECUs will.

HP/Dominator does, not sure about the lower offerings.

The Dominator has support for e-trans built in, as well as drive by wire and traction control.

Holley has some comparison charts for their' stuff but some of the Sniper stuff is new enough to where it isn't included. The Terminator uses the HP ECU, and you can flash it for free to HP status if you choose. It expands the ability to configure, and it is strongly recommended.

Not sure if the Sniper ECU can be flashed, that I think is one of the big differences. It also has less injector drivers I believe, so you can only do like 8 injectors. I think the Dominator has 36 drivers, but can't recall exactly.

I'm curious to see what will happen to the MSD Atomic now that Holley owns MSD.

If you price a FItech with a trans controller the Dominator is not that much more expensive.

If you're considering things such as controlling transmission, coil near plug etc. you're beyond the realm of a carburetor replacement and should be looking at things like the Holley HP/Dominator, Megasquirt etc.

I love my FiTech, but remember, it's just a carb replacement, by nature it's not supposed to do all of that.

I completely understand that. Not comparing the two options.

Just saying if you are running an electronic trans it is worth a look.

I just read on page 15 of the instructions where you can use a locked out MSD pro billet but it seems like an awful lot of work compared to the holley distributor. I used a summit coupon and got the distributor for 399. The MSD pro billet is 3 something so it was worth the money to me to have everything match up. I bought the sniper fuel tank as well

ponjohn - The 8 injector setup uses the same ECU, only the throttle body is diff, and I understand they will offer the throttle body separately in the near future. The 8 injector setup (stealth) has part numbers assigned to it, so bet it's in pre-production or maybe even production.

Now I just wish they would have more of a fluid upgrade path to each unit. Going from the Sniper ECU to the Terminator/HP ECU is a replacement, and a harness. But the benefit of the Sniper is that it's self-contained (for the most part)

I can see why they don't offer the trans controller built into the Sniper, because it is self contained.

Found my thread for the Terminator install:

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...ght=terminator

Think I reference the 1/2" line install thread in there, it shows more detail on the tank install.

I know some consider the Aeromotive stealth pump install, but am hearing more and more complain that the sump for it is inadequate, and you get starvation below a 1/2 a tank. Believe it may even now comment that in the instructions, but I haven't confirmed that.

Holley bought Mr. Gasket? Wow, that I didn't know. That means Holley now owns Hooker, Accel, and a number of other brands. Holley moved the Hooker plant out of MX and to Mississippi, maybe now the passenger side won't hang low!

Other interesting Holley info:

2011 - NASCAR decides to switch from carburetors to fuel injection systems for the 2012 Sprint Cup racing season. Holley's billet aluminum throttle bodies were selected in conjunction with a McLaren Electronic Systems and Freescale Semiconductor.[24]

2012 - Holley Hi-Ram intake manifold becomes standard equipment on GM COPO Camaros equipped with the LS7 aluminum block.[25]

2012 - Holley's Earl's Performance Plumbing brand transmission coolers become standard equipment on GM COPO Camaros.[25]

2013 - Holley HP EFI engine control unit (ECU) became standard equipment used on all of Chevrolet Performance's COPO Camaro factory-built race cars.[25]

2015 - Holley HP EFI engine control unit (ECU) became optional equipment used in conjunction with the Ilmor 396 engine package which is legal for use in the ARCA racing series.[26]

2016 - Holley HP EFI engine control unit (ECU) became standard equipment used on all cars in the NHRA's Pro Stock class, the world premier class for naturally aspirated drag cars.[27]

One salesman that I talked to when I was shopping systems was touting all the race associations were now using the Holley EFI systems. He says to me," What's that tell you?". I say, it tells me they're probably getting them free! I suppose it's a pretty good endorsement of their product line. Something to be said with going with the biggest I guess. At least maybe more widespread support.
