What makes paint crack?
Fresh paint...well maybe a month old now, but what makes a paint crack like this with no filler underneath?
I'm in the process of putting the wire harness in and found it when I crawled under the car to route the starter wires. Wayne S

my guess would be a grease or foreign substance or just poorly prepped surface underneath

I agree with wytnyt.that paint is way too new to crack from "old age",most likely some kind of surface contamination is my guess also.you might be able to repair it,in just that small spot, and it would be an easy and quick repair.I'd watch it for another week or so,before I started the repair just to see if it gets any worse.Your'e fortunate that its a solid color and its down low,you can "cheat" a little bit on the repair and no one will ever notice.

If youre going to repair it I would explore with a fresh razor blade.
Cut a V groove on each side of crack ,then fill with paint. May take a couple of applications to fill it. |

most any imbalance of mixing components can cause severe reactions, but being its localized to one spot,,id go with bad prep

yeah looks like delamination due to poor prep

Agreed.
Too heavy an application will do it too, but it would show in a larger area if that was the case.

I vote for poor prep as well. What it was I don't know, but I'd bet it's not the paint! I'd be worried about the rest of the car!

given the normal elasticity of urethanes when done properly I would have to agree with the hardner and too much paint at once in that area.
Ive painted visqueen poly sheeting and it never cracked or flaked off but it was thinner coats. |

Thanks Gents...I gave the body shop a "heads up" on the area and they told me they would stand behind the paint, so when I get her up and running (or closer anyway) I'll drop her off for repair.
