Don't think about it, just buy it. If it's a flat tappet cam. put Rhodes lifters in it and a 2500 stall speed convertor. If it's a roller cam, up the convertor to 3,000-3,500. It will drive just fine on the street and the convertors drive like a normal car until you plant your foot.

The "Edelbrock" cam in the head package they have is basically a RAIV clone so maybe the previous owner used one of those.

Exactly this!!!!!! Cam change would be pretty simple with engine already out. Cam/lifters for under $400 would still be a great deal, but you would still want to know whether it is stroked, but that is something you can do later. . And putting a vacuum gauge on it while it is still running in the car could tell you if you need to worry.

Most probably NOT a 400. Check to see if the block is a 557 block. Then, if it is, Then lean on it gently or re sell it in pieces. If it`s a good block, plug and play that bitch.

Seems like some missed the roller cam. If you purchased aluminum heads in 1996 you purchased Edelbrock round ports. A little later Kaufman entered with D-ports and really later Edelbrock woke up and joined the D-port sales. We've got a half dozen engines with round port heads in the club on cars with AC and power brakes and they are easy driving on the street. Then we have about a half dozen members that have Edelbrock D-ports or Kaufman heads that went much further down the cam list and they don't try to run vacuum assisted brakes. Anyway, it's not the round port heads per-se that makes things rowdy on the street.

We have one member that has round ports and a smallish 068 sized roller cam on his 468 stroker along with a 750 CFM carb. On the club dyno day his horsepower was way down but he took the honors for highest torque reading.

Fingers crossed for picking up the engine on Saturday. We're stoked. I've been adding up the cost of the parts on this motor and it blows my mind. Not to mention that these parts are all unavailable right now.
Has anyone put the RA IV round port cast iron manifolds in a '67? I see they list them as for '68 and up, but wasn't sure if they were talking about the engine or the car.

Default I don't think they make them.

I've not heard of factory-style cast iron manifolds for round ports that will fit in pre-1968 A-bodies.

Good luck!

Default I stand corrected.

RARE website shows a modified set that fits 1964-67 GTO !!

https://www.ramairrestoration.com/rm...oversized.html

Pair, New for all 64-67 GTO, LM & Tempests using round port or Edelbrock heads. These require one 2-bolt and one 3-bolt flange (sold seperately). 2.45" collector for more flow.

These are our famous RM-4-OS modified to fit in 66-67 Abody. In the 64-65 Abody you may need to do some minor grinding on rear of underengine xmember to achieve good fit. Many 64-65 customers have also attained excellent fit by relocating engine .250-.500" to rear.

Good luck!

Goooood luck getting anything from RARE right now, though. I've been waiting on manifolds and pulleys from them for months. It's not their fault, though.

Got it! Traffic was brutal so it ended up being three hours each way. We'll start looking at it tomorrow. I took a cursory glance but couldn't see any part numbers on the heads or carb. I'm curious if the heads are 72cc or 87cc. The paint on the block is obscuring the casting numbers, so I'll have to do some scrapen'n. We got pretty much everything to fire it up, but I'll probably replace the sundry items like plug wires, etc. Not sure if I'll use that carb. And I'll probably spring for a nice new distributor.
That's great news about those Ram Air exhaust manifolds. Thanks for that. Funny, I was on their website but didn't see them. But that's what makes this forum so great. Lead times aside, I'm happy that they're available.

Carb number is on that pad facing camera, with grease on it, likely a 1405.

If you buy a distributor, beware of import stuff.
Not sure what I’d recommend? Bob, you on here?

That is a CarterAFB (with an Eidelbrock label so post 1984) and if a 1405 is a 600 cfm square bore so not a factory manifold either.

Looks like a Performer RPM intake.

Do you know if the present distributor has been modified / recurved?

Default There are markings on the ends of the heads.

72cc heads (1st pic) are marked "Edelbrock Performer RPM" while 87cc (2nd pic) are marked "Edelbrock Performer".

If the intake is off, the 72cc heads will have NO exhaust crossover channel (3rd pic) while the 87cc (4th pic) have a hole drilled in the very center to supply heat to warm the intake.

Good luck!
