I believe it's (1st digit is gate number designation; second digit is shift).

or, its the date it hit the dealership..it was put on after it left the factory with a simple stamp

ive seen them on the trim tag and some actually on the VIN tag...there was a lot of debate about it years ago, and some one found a lot person that actually stamped them for the dealership

No, the '2 2' is for the body gate number.
Read the link that was posted by RA II.

The VIN tag should have been stamped if it was the dealer date stamp.

Jim, since your '64 was also Fremont built, you should find the gate no. on your Data Plate too.

Same upper right positioning except that for '64, Fremont embossed them. My Fremont '64 is embossed 1-1 (note the hyphen used with the embossed nos.).

As was noted in the earlier thread, early in '65, it seems Fremont continued to emboss the gate no. same as in '64.

But later on for '65, they will be stamped (and lack the hyphen) as the example you posted in the OP.

Don't know why Fremont stopped embossing the gate no. and started stamping it instead. Just one of those little quirks.

Mine is embossed with 3-1. Also, there is no a stamp on my VIN plate. Maybe they didn't do this in '64? I don't know if the VIN plate on the '65 has any stampings on it. The car is in Idaho, the owner just sent me a picture of the cowl tag with his question.

Jim, the date stamping on the VIN plate was one of those things the dealer was "supposed" to do but not all of them bothered to do it.

Not sure when the practice originated but pretty sure you can find date stampings on '64VIN plates.

Mine however is like yours, no date stamp on the VIN plate. My car was originally sold by Herman Theroff Pontiac in Fresno.

my 64 has no stampings on the VIN tag I've also added pics from the 67 post . I've always wondered what the numbers at the bottom of the cowl tag meant .
