Default 68 Commanche??

My friend just missed out on an interesting 68 Fbird 400.

It was on a local French equivalent of Craig's list. It was ratty but looked savable. It was a very high option 400HO car with auto AC, tilt, cruise, wood wheel, rear defogger, 8 track etc etc.

What was neat is it had a real leather original interior, I don't have the codes in front of me but I think it was 281. It is called saddle and it was a very late addition to the option list. It looks identical to the gold interior of a 69 bird.

High option cars in Québec were really rare especially on cars like Fbirds. There was a pontiac dealer here in Montreal called Grant Hamilton who marketed a special Firebird called the Banshee and all were equipped just like this car with gold leather, 400 HO, all the power and luxury options. They sold them at their own dealership but also at a few other dealers in Ontario.

I've seen a few 69's over the years but never a 68 but they supposedly made about 20% of these commanchees on Late 68's. For that matter I've never seen any 68 with that late season leather interior.

Anyone have any knowledge on 68 commanchees or the interior

There was a 68 Comanche for sale about 8-10 years ago (I think on this site). It had leather interior, and I think brown or dark green exterior. I have pictures somewhere if I find them I'll post a couple. THe car needed total restoration at the time.

I've never seen any 68 documentation but my friend bought a 69 GTO at Grant Hamilton new and remembers seeing a bunch of 69 cars being modified in the body shop and a few 68's still for sale on the lot.

He remembers that the 68's were Verdoro green and the 69's Expresso Brown. I think the "special color" was just the cream white accent paint

The 13 # comes from a Canadian Magazine Car and Track featuring 69 Comanche road test.
In that article it mentions 13, 1968 Comanche Firebird's were built in 1968.
We have located one 68 Comanche and it is Verdoro Green.

Since I purchased my 69 Comanche Firebird in 1994, I have been trying to locate as many of these cars as I can. Of the 13 cars done up as Comanches for the 1968 model year, I know of 3 that are still out there. All 3 are loaded up the same way with the saddle leather interior. This one in Quebec would make number 4 of the 13.
John- if you can find out where it went, let me know

HFR- thanks for posting the link, I hadn't seen it before (pics are of my car)

Regards,
Steve
