Irwindale Speedway
I am looking for a picture that I believe was taken at Irwindale Speedway. It has the 69 Trans Am and 69 Judge in front of the scoring tower. Does anyone know how I can get a copy of this?

Sorry I don't have access to that picture, but I do have a clear memory of Arnie Beswick's '63 Tempest racing against the Mercury of Don Nicholson in 1966. It was a two out of three match race.
I was in LA on business and stuck there over the weekend, so I went to the drag strip. Hard to believe it's been closed for so many years. In any case, Arnie won the first round, Nicholson the second, after which NHRA awarded Mercury the "Best Engineered Factory Experimental Car." The third round, Arnie was ahead when the body flew off Nicholson's Mercury and broke into thousands of pieces when it het the ground. A team of Mercury engineers with brooms quickly gathered up the pieces and put them in a pile and burned them right at the side of the strip. It happened so fast not many knew. Arnie Beswick, when I talked with him in 2012, remembers this just as I do, except he is quite delighted to describe the evernt!! Sure wish I had pictures!!

The old Irwindale drag strip and the current Irwindale Raceway are two different things. The 1/4 mile dragstrip closed decades ago. The current Irwindale Raceway is in a different location and is a oval raceway with a 1/8 drag strip within.
Not sure which the original poster is referring to, probably the old drag strip. |

My high school buddy's family owned the property where the current raceway is located. They are in the landfill business. In High School we used to go to the old track out near the old gravel pits. As a youngster I used to climb to the top of a large tree on our property and listen the the dragsters.

The original Irwindale dragstrip which was actually named San Gabriel Drag closed in 63, a new Irwindale drag strip opened(different location) in about 1967 and closed in 1977 aprox so maybe that one.

The print you're looking for was/is sold by Jim Wangers. You might check his website- geetotiger.com The track is actually Riverside, not Irwindale
