Very soon I am having the TH400 transmission in my '71 Firebird overhauled. This seems like a great time to replace the stock torque converter for one with a little quicker takeoff. Is this a smart thing to do? If yes, what would be a good stall speed for good street takeoff (not racing)....1,900 to 2,100 rpm maybe? I'm also swapping the 2.73 gears for 3.42's if that makes any difference. Thanks.

what cam is in the animal ? this will make a difference in the stall speed that you should pick. if it lopes you'll want a looser converter, if it doesn't a stock one will probably be fine. one thing to remember, the more horsepower[torque] that the engine makes the higher the converter will stall. if you don't replace the origional one be sure the shop flushes it. mike
