IIRC, the equivalent of a socket and nut was sold as kit by MrGasket back in the day. That will certainly work. Be sure to use anti-seaze on the nut or you'll ruin it -- or have plenty of nuts available. Of course now you've got to drill & tap the existing hole for a screw-in stud, but by implication, you knew that.

At the machine shop I work at in the summer, we use a slide hammer with the end threaded on the inside so it threads onto the stud. Usually just that will remove them. If it doesn't, we heat the boss with an oxyacetylene rig.

If you plan on just pulling out press-ins and replacibng them with press-ins, then get some washers, a nut, and have a party. If you want to also tap for screw-ins, then DON'T go hog wild and pull them all. You will need to use one stud of a pair to hold a tap guide in place to tap the other hole. See referenced thread above for the DIY methodology.

Thanks all.
Plan is to replace with screw in studs. I love that jig in the link above but I don't have the time, tools or talent to make one. |
