Default th400 1968

i have the original drivetrain in a 1968 gto convertible. upon switching out the rear, i also switched the speedometer drive gear. after switching it again to get a more accurate speed ometer reading, i found that the void where the gear goes in is full of transmission fluid. is this normal? as i now also have a slight leak from that o ring at the gear assy. thanks for your input. z man
