Default Line Hone Mandrel for Roller cam bearings

Anyone use Jax Specialty Engines in Hamel MN?

Engine builder Mag had an article on line honing the cam tunnel to insert the roller bearings for the cam.

Very interesting article.

Still some Pontiac Power being built.

Line hone? I’ve align bored blocks for roller bearings but I’ve never align honed one. Pontiacs are one of the few block that utilize the same size bearing on all cam bores, so it seems like a good idea.

Here's a pic of the article from Engine Builder Mag:

Line Hone Mandrel

May explain it better?
Interesting solution I thought.

The only concern I would have is a bell mouthed bore if a machinist was too aggressive in align honing the cam bores.

I think they had to bore the cam bores out for the bigger roller bearings?
They needed a way to set the boring bar to the bigger diameter?

This is an engine I am working on for Aaronman (member here) Jax is owned/operated by Jack Machula, a very accomplished drag racer from the 60s and 70s. Lyle Haley (Shop Doc) is a very experienced engine builder, shop instructor, author. Both are Pontiac guys, Jack has a '65 GTO that he bought new. Lyle has a '57 Pontiac w/ a 495 ci. - soon to be on the street.
The cam tunnel was way too tight for the bearing (about .004 interference). Lyle came up with the way to use a line hone mandrel on the aluminum block. the bearings have now been pulled in with the BHJ tool. The cam is very happy thanks to Jax.

Thanks for the info, Bill!

I was wondering whose engine this was.
Forgot Aaron was building an aluminum engine.

Pontiac ingenuity at work!

Anyway you could provide a link to the article? I would be interested in reading it. I found Engine Builder Magazine on-line but not the article referenced. Thank you.

John - Thanks for posting the article. Bill, Jack and Lyle are a great team. I would never be able to race Pontiacs without their collective knowledge and support. The 535 MR1A block is now being assembled. We'll post some dyno results when it's done. Hoping for around 900hp.

Thanks for the link. That was an innovative way to center the mandrel for over sizing. I never really thought about how I would center the mandrel because I don't have one for camshaft tunnels. That's a job I have to send out for now. Only one shop in the area can do them. Interesting solution. That Pontiac engine is lucky to have a shop willing to solve problems and do thongs right rather than just complain it isn't a Chevy or Ford.
