Default What is the best car for a High Performance 455?

I bought a 455/462 high performance engine from a forum member and was thinking a bout the best type of car to install it in.With all the torque it produces, are you better to go with an early or late Firebird with leaf spring rear suspension, or a GTO with the Four Link type rear suspension. I have both available. The engine is built from Cliff Ruggles advice and reccommended parts. It ran 7.90s in a 69 GTO with 3.55 rear and a 2600 converter. With that type of power on tap, it looks like wheelspin would be a problem. What is the best car to get the power to the ground? Thanks for the replies in advance.

Wow, most people are looking for a MOTOR to put into their car, not a CAR to put a motor into. In the 70's I had a Firebird that would flat out fly. It never lost traction, except on gravel, of course. Good luck in your search.

How about a Camaro, Chevelle or Corvette? Really, just about anything is a good choice for a strong 455. 68 and up GTOs and Lemans have more tire and header room and that is a plus. Any car can be set up to corner better,
Also, an early 6Os full size can make a great car too. Just some ideas.

I would drop it in an S-10.

Maybe, with a little weight in the back... Chop it and Drop it!
Or a Pinto that would be a trip
LOL

'64 or '65 Tempest or LeMans. Put a Super T-10 or th400 and a 9" rear end in it and you will be set.

I would vote for the lightest full frame car with a factory 4 link.

Fiero (I'm joking, in a hopeful kind of way) There's a complete 86 Fiero GT nearby, and been thinning the SAME Supercar thing.

My vote is for an early Tempest/LeMans/GTO. Can't go wrong with the size and integrity of the car, and certainly can't go wrong with the styling!! I prefer Body On Frame cars to Unibody, tho'.....

How about a Chevy II? Be nice to return the insult to so many Chevy guys who continue to put every conceivable Chevy engine into one of our beloved heavy tanks.

When the inevitable happens, and some guy asks you why you put a Pontiac motor in a Chevy, simply say that you blew up the Olds motor.

An "A" body would be my choice (LeMans, GTO), it has a better weight bias than a firebird. The engine sits back a little further in a GTO...my choice. AND a GTO has more room everywhere in the car to work on stuff, especially the engine compt...

Dare to think different

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1929-...item4cf37a6f93

Now THAT would be fun and fast with a 455 in it.

All depends on what kind of driving you want to do. Power to the ground? Pro street it. Anything. Cruiser? 66 Bonnie, 2+2, or like big-car. Can even be a convertible. Track day? 2nd gen T/A. Strip? Ventura.

if cost is "no object", then why not a cobra ( 60s ones ) kit car replica?

might have a little trouble with F to R weight bias tho, LOL.

Nah, even the side-oilers were close to 50/50, and that isn't exactly a light engine...It sits far enough back in the cobra it won't mess up the handling.

Up here we have Acadians which are just novas with Pontiac badges. My first car was a 1969 Acadian...I've always thought about doing a Pontiac swap into one....maybe someday when my 80 Trans Am gets tired looking I'll install the drivetrain from it.......
