Default '61-63 Tempest 4 cyl air cleaner covers

The threads in the side holes of my '62 Tempest's air cleaner cover are stripped and according to the original owner, he owned several of these cars in the 70's and says they all had that problem. Does anybody else here have that same problem with the air cleaner covers? Thanks

P.S. I'm also looking for an original a/c unit and 4-barrel carburetor for my Tempest :-)

That is a common problem due to over tightening but repairable. Put the bolt through the stripped out hole. Thread a nut onto the bolt & tighten it down. Then tack weld the nut to the stripped out nut on the inside of the air filter cover. An original a/c setup is allmost impossible to find. A 4 bbl carb & manifold is not as hard to come by.

PS!!!!! Welcome to the PY forums & make sure you post up pictures of your car!!

Thanks, guys...the original color was a creamy beige but was painted yellow in 1972 by the son of the original owner, whom I bought the car from! Nice red one and nice '63, there...would love to get a '62 wagon someday or a 61-63 Cutlass/Jetfire/F-85 or a '61-63 Skylark to add to it :-)

Is there a pattern here?

I never had one that was stripped. The problem with the (snorkel) ones I find is that if the engine is run without the side bolts in place the snorkel vibrates around right into the spinning fan.

Keith's fix sounds easy enough and not visible.

If you look around you should be able to find a good one not too far from you. I and others have spares if you want a replacement.

P.S. Nice Car!

My air cleaner is not stripped out and I have an underdash cool pak AC unit. Buy my car and you can have it.
