Default What did you learn to drive in?

This could be interesting.Especially for for us 'mature' members. What kind of vehicle[s] did you learn to drive in? Who 'learned' you?,and what year did you become a 'legal' driver?
The very first car i ever drove was a 64 Catalina,i was about 14.Just up and down a back road, less than 1/8 mile each way.I actually learned in a 74 GMC 1/2 ton,3 on the tree, and a 63 Plymouth w/ pushbutton shift. Also did some time with a 49 Chev 1/2 ton.My dad taught me on back roads in the spring/summer of '77 and i passed my driver's test in the 63 Plymouth in the fall of 1977.

Default I remember every minute of that day...

VW at a friends backyard. Dad finished teaching me in his 1967 Chevy station wagon 250 six popper three on the tree, manual steering and brakes. I got my DL in 1973 after completing driver ed (Discount on insurance!) in one of those Dodge darts with dual pedal set ups.
I was so excited the first time I flew solo I almost rear ended somebody on the way to pick my Dad up from work.

The first vehicle I "drove" was a 1948 Jeep pickup--sitting on my Dad's lap while he operated the controls and I steered. I was about 6 or 7 at the time.

The car I took Driver's Ed in was a 1971 Plymouth Fury II, in the summer of '71.

Took my Driver's License test drive in the family driver, a '69 Catalina 4-door sedan. This was in October of 1971.

Learned to drive a manual trans (three-on-the-tree) in my Dad's '63 Ford Camper Custom pickup. This was my main mode of transportation during my junior and senior years of h.s., 1972-3.

Our 63 Plymouth was very easy to drive.A very base model, slant 6,pushbutton trans,no power anything, including the engine.lol.It did get about 40mpg.It is now a 'Car 54' Pro/Street clone w/blown 440.My dad 'insisted' i learn to drive with a stick-shift,he was not fond of automatics. He was also a very impatient teacher.

First car was a 72 Pontiac Bonneville, my Grandfathers, around his house when I was 12.
At 14 I taught myself to drive, pushed my dad's VW beetle down the street after they went to bed and drove it around the neighborhood. Sounds simple enough, but it was a 4 speed and there was snow on the ground. Didn't hit anything, had a lot of fun too.

Was it one of those 'clutch-less 4 speeds? I drove one once, that was tricky.I think you had to push down on the shifter while shifting.

grandfather used to pedal for me while I drove his old farm truck ( 72 f1?? ) out in the hay fields and then when I got older I drove the same truck myself around the farm , and when I was 14 he taught me how to drive a semi ( old emmeryville with a screamin jimmy and a 13 speed cableshifter ) in the hayfeild and then I got my farmhands license but he disconnected the upper range so the truck wouldn't go any faster than 25 mph , got my true license in 83 in my freinds chevette 4 door ( the car he later crashed and was killed in ) got my chaufers license ( truck ) in 86 , and got my CDL A in 90 ( they wouldn't honor my chaufers even though I was driving rigs for 2 years already . 2.5 million plus miles later still putting around .

First was a 1950 Mercury, then a 1955 BSA Road Rocket (two wheeler), and then a 1947 Dodge. By that time I was 17. My first driving/riding experiences were when I was 15, which was in 1955.

I learned in a '61 VW bug (my first car, my Dad's old one) and my Dad's '74 Honda Civic, both 4-speed stick.

Did some Driver's Ed in high school in one of those slant-six 4-door Dodge Darts with the extra brake pedal for the instructor as well.

Took my Mom's '72 Chevy long wheelbase Beauville van for my license test in '75, the auto trans and power steering made it easier for a nervous 16-year old.

Learned to drive around the farm before I was 12 driving a '58 Chevy pickup in the fields, and a late 60s/early 70s Toyota wagon. Didn't get my license until I was 17, and hit the road in a '66 VW Baja Bug.

My favorite uncle when I was 14 (73). 1953 cheby belair with a straight 6 and three on the tree. He had a split manifold with true duals and glasspacks. He insisted that I stopped and started like my grandmother was in the front seat with a hot cup of tea!
Very smooth.

My first drive with a foot clutch (our '39 John Deere had a hand clutch) was our '34 Reo stake-rack truck (probably about a 2 or 3 ton) while the bigger kids loaded hay bales onto it (maybe 1950 when I was ten). I remember having trouble seeing over the dash while I was pushing the clutch in. And guys got mad when I didn't smoothly engage the clutch and the stacked bales would fall over.
