1998 Dodge Grand Caravan... Dad wouldn't let me drive his 72 cutlass until I got some experience and the GTO was still in pieces.

I kind of learn how to drive in my bestfriend's dads car he took me out to the community college parking lot and let me drive his 78 camaro with a 355 and four speed. It was fun until I almost hit a pole, man I could not drive back then.

We can't all learn on cool cars! |

Learned to drive in a 1940 Ford with no brakes. By the time I was 12 I was powershifting our 1950 Chevrolet pickup with 3 on the tree. My dad had me pulling a trailer 3 miles or so down the road by myself and he had made me wear a baseball hat to make me look older in case the sherrif was around. (Probably made me look 14!)

Learning to drive
I drove a Fordson tractor when I was 8 or 9, then when I was 11 or 12 Grandpa told me to drive the 65 International pickup with a creeper 4 speed at walking speed while he and Dad tossed hay bales in the back. I really learned to drive in, get this, a buddy's '59 Renault Dauphine, a goofy little rear engine car with a three speed on the floor and about 12 HP. I think we were 14 or so. His dad let us drive it in a pasture, so it was not long before we were power sliding it (only had enough power if the grass was wet!)
Officially, I learned to drive in a 72 Chevy demonstrator that a local dealer let the school use for driver training. No one was sure what engine it had as the badge on one fender said 350, but the other side said 400. Took the driver test in Dad's 68 Rambler American. What a boring car.... Saved my money and bought my 67 Firebird a few months later, leading me to my Pontiac obsession that I still suffer with nearly 40 years later.

When I was 13, mom & dad broke down in their 72 Ford Ranch wagon. They called me to drive to them just a few miles away (BE CAREFUL SON!) so they could jump start the Ford. I hopped in their '67 Chevy Impala (283/powerglide... wow...) & came to the rescue. Learned to drive in the old Imp' & could parallel park that boat with ease. Took my road test in it too.

Here is my story:
I was fortunate that my parents were quite lenient and my Mom when I was 14 took me driving in a nearby cemertary....great winding narrow roads and no cops......she had a 1956 Caddy coupe...... Driving age is 16 in my state and at age 15 I bought a brand new 1963 Ford XL hardtop....payments were $99 a month. denniskirban@yahoo.com |

When I was 11, my dad let me drive an almost new '72 Suburban around the warehouse lot he worked at. When I was 14, I aquired a nice '66 Riviera GS from a tow yard the neighbor worked for. I got it running and was able to sneak driving it around the area I lived in, a rural area of central Maine. That Riv was my first car. By 15 , I had 4 cars - the '66 Riv, a '61 Cadillac convertible , '48 Olds fastback that never ran, and a '62 Lincoln Continental which is still in a private junkyard in Maine. I robbed some parts from it a few years ago on a visit. My first Pontiac was a '68 Bonneville convertible after I moved to Florida in 1981.

69 Plymouth Valiant 4dr sedan. Piss yellow. Slant six auto on the column. Good student car; not enough power to get into trouble, if you did a neutral drop it would simply kill the engine.

My first car was a 1963 Mercury Monterey with the rear window that would roll down (electric). the year was 1974. I went from that to a OLD 2 stick, double clutching Auto Car big rig when I was 17 years old.

"Rich kid"??? At age fifteen, I assume some adult actually signed (and was liable) for the loan? The only time I ever made car payments was 1961, when I bought an almost-new '60 car. I was making "decent" money as an electronics technician (age 21), so I paid off the $1,000 loan in twelve months- ninety-some dollars/month- much higher payments than most car buyers were making at that time.
