I wish the 1970 455 # 64 head was more prevalent i want a set bad for my 4 inch stroke program compression wise they are in the sweet spot with simple flat tops and with large valves and screw in studs
Most people want stupid money for them if I'm going to pay 80% value of aluminum heads i will just go there

Jim Hand had a set of 64's on his 473 inch wagon engine, when it was running serious 1/4 mile times. I have been to several Pontiac events he raced at and spoke at. He went into detail about the work he had to perform on those 64 heads to make them into what was needed for his engine. I don't remember all the details, but it had a lot to do with where the short angle (floor) exited into the valve opening.
I know Jim ran those heads for a while. I was thrilled when he went to 6X's because I have 6X's also. I know the 6X heads have powered the wagon to 11.40's, which is crazy!!! I would not choose 64 heads for a 455 as first pick. They do have a proper sized combustion chamber, but other heads can work. Jim?

Really, really didn't want to follow that line, but got tired of waiting for another post.
How come the stock engines I tear down the pistons are .006" to no more than.010" down in the hole, but I keep seeing .020" to .025" quoted? Just never saw a stock piston that far down on initial teardown. The distance would be true for crap aftermarket pistons, but hope people are measuring actual depth and not believing internet hearsay.

Got some 5c heads at the shop now which will lower compression and make it a good driver. Should get them back in a week or so then install the motor.

My take on the deck heights, in general...is that 455's are usually .005 down, in stack form, and with replacement pistons...400's are usually .020 or slightly more...not sure of 428's though. My thinking was that the 455's were that way, because of the high wrist pin placement, and the creators used up as much territory as possible to keep the ring pack where they thought it needed to be. They even went to the trouble of using one 1/16" comp. ring...Saying all this, the 428's are not quite as squeezed together as the 455's...

Bob decided to go with the 5C's which will drop his compression ratio.
The 13's are now posted for sale, asking $750 OBO. I might have tried to run the 13's and played with the tuning but Bob didn't want to do all that and I can't say as I blame him. He wants to run regular gas if possible, tune it to spec, and otherwise not worry about it. His Catalina is a convertible and absolutely beautiful.

Run the 72cc heads and just buy the right piston. Smaller the chamber usually equals better short turn.
