Question Trans cooler.

Thinking about upgrading my trans cooler. What do you guys like that don't break the bank?
Been using a 5/8 tube one for years, but thinking with the bigger stall now might not be a bad idea for a better one?

I have a TH-400 with a very tight 3000 stall nitrous converter. I am using the B&M Universal SuperCooler rated at 29,200 BTU 11"x11"x1-1/2". Never seen temps above 180 after street driving, or multiple drag passes. Great product.

Here is what I did:

Welded 2 1/2" tall aluminum bars across the radiator, 1 higher and 1 lower. Then, bolted the trans cooler vertically on to the aluminum bars with the hose fittings facing down. Ran push lock hoses along the frame up to the trans...and its all set. Hope this helps

Ok thanks!.. Think I will order the one down from that size 8x11 I have a perfect place to put it. I was reading on them and it says u should not mount them with the fittings down can trap air in them.

463GTO - Are you running the fluid through the transmission cooler and this B&M cooler or the B&M cooler only and is it a street driven car? I ask because I have the same cooler - just don't have my car running yet.

Not exactly sure what you are asking. However, I am running only this B&M cooler... No other coolers. I have driven it around town with no issues 20-30 minutes of run time. It is just a race car but being that I can run pump gas I do occasionally drive it around....

Thanks. I was wondering if this was the only cooler you had and if it kept the tranny cool on a street driven car. Looks like it does with minimal street use so that's a good thing.

Grandville - you have some great threads and that 2 ton beast is flying. Good job dude!

I sure hope it works better than just for a 20-30 minute drive! I drive mine that much just to get to the track, If they are more efficient I am sure its all good!. Mine will be here tomorrow

Thanks JoePapa! I'm not done yet either!

I believe I have this same cooler on my f/b (29000btu or something). T350 with 3600 10" TCI. I have NEVER seen temps above 160 with this cooler...usually they hover between 150 to 155. I don't use the radiator cooler either (have a manual Be Cool radiator). Sensor is mechanical mounted in the cast alum pan (+1 or 2 quarts...can't remember). Also, no fan on the cooler and it's spaced about 2" from the radiator (in front of it at the bottom driver side).

Does anyone know if it's a problem to run the trans this cold?

I have read comments in my research suggesting a trans temp can be too low. Don't recall specifc numbers, but my notes suggest 175-200 degrees might be normal. One recent tech article suggested 180 degrees or cooler.

My issue might be extreme. The guage reads from 100 to 250 degrees, it seldom goes much above the 100 degree mark on cool days just crusing. I have a large Earl's 25-row stack-plate oil cooler used in conjunction the radiator cooler inside a Rod Davis unit with twin Spal fans.
TH200-4R trans, sensor is mechanical mounted in the cast alum aftermarket deep pan. Cooler is spaced about 2" from the front of the radiator.

I don't think 180 is too low...in fact I thought that was the target temp. Now 150s...maybe...

Judging by the mechanical gauge I have (which isn't the most scientific of explanations)...looks like 180-190 is the target temp. The numbers start getting more spaced apart after 200 and really spaced apart after 220. Likewise, 140 and 150s are nearly on top of each other.

The trans temp gage is the 3rd from the left in the smaller cluster, above the cigarette lighter.
