Back to the OPs question, I would recommend 3.73 gears. I run 3.70s in my 9" with 275/60 drag radials and can cruise around at 55-60 mph easily. You race at a 1/4 mile or 1/8 mile track? My 474 would come across the 1/4 mile at the top of my rpm comfort range at 6600 going 131-132 mph.

Sure, you can do it and I did for years. All it takes is something un expected and things get crazy.
I passed a car on 2 lane and a car passes another one in the opposite direction quite a distance in front of me, only thing is he was going VERY fast. So I passed to car and was getting back in my lane, just a little quicker than normal and that was all it took. I had the 4" tires on front and once they started sliding there was no stopping it. Spun it 3 times and landed up on some railroad track. bent suspension, broke 2 wheels and I had the car ready to paint. All the body work ruined than the guy who was painting it for me got fired and left the area. I was left with a mess. A bad deal all the way around. It can happen very fast and I am a very good driver. |

So I have ordered 33 spline axles with 5/8 studs, c clip eliminators(wish I had done big bearing ends) and the spool kit, all from Strange. What gear brand will hold decent power? I don't think they offer 3.73 in Pro gear.

Got a spool and broke a billet 31 spline axle, seen the wall several times in my racing endeavors and but never made contact. I can drive now. But that is at the track, everything is sticky, slicks, rubber down. When you break loose with street tires, once you slide you can not stop it. Literally on roller skates. I grew up driving go carts with solid axles, I know how to handle it. On the street there could be oil down, lots of stuff. I mean, for the guy that has a 9 second street car, bad @ss, spool, big DOT slicks and just drives around to show, pick up a street race, OK, fine. But doing any sort of real driving, save it. You car with thank you and maybe the other people you can hurt. |

Understand something, it was not a "bad decimation" per se. The pass I made was safe, car I was passing was going about 50 and I might have gotten to 70 for a moment. The person coming the other way was doing near 100mph, started his pass on a mild curve.
Unforeseen circumstances can create the need for sudden movement for safety. That can be all it takes. Regular use of a spool on the street is a fools game. Detroit Locker makes 35 spline units. Good move for the street, |

Ok I am wrong. It was a poor choice.

Considering your engine makes 500-550hp you sure the rear-ends were setup right? That's a lot of breakage for that power level isn't?
