Default Carpet

Looking to replace the original carpet in my '68, who makes and who carries the closet match to the original??

FWIW, the carpet is black.

Thanks,

Mike

I am looking forward to the answers you get on this post. I bought a black replacement carpet from The Paddock a couple years ago for a 68 Cutlass convertible and it's badly faded now from all the "topless" rides. Are any of they guaranteed not to fade??

I'll throw in my two cents.......I bought a black carpet set from
Ames a few years ago and when it came it was not black.....It looked dark
purple, especially when the top was down. I sent it back and got a set from Year One and it has been fine for six years.....it was black not purple and it
has not faded at all so far. Three years ago I was restoring the interior in my
son's 87 Monte Carlo Super Sport and bought new carpet in a dark maroon
color from Auto Custom Carpets(ACC) and 9 months later it had faded to
white! It looked absolutely horrible in less than a year on a hardtop car with
darkly tinted windows. Before I got around to trying another brand on the Monte, it was stolen and never recovered. Down here in Texas, if you are going to drive an 80-87 Cutlass or Monte Carlo, the only way you can keep it
is to hire an armed guard to stand next to it while it is parked!

I bought my black carpet from Ames about 4 years ago. It's from Auto Custom Carpet. So far no fading, but my car is a hardtop that lives in the garage most of the time so the interior doesn't see much sunlight. I thought the overall fit of the carpet was pretty good.

ACC carpet is a good choice. Mine fit well and looks great.

No, I don't know who their vendor is, but there is no doubt
that Year One and Ames are using two different sources. Assuming Ames is
using ACC, which makes sense because the former President of ACC who was
killed in a plane crash was a good friend of Steve Ames, then that means I have had three different carpets from ACC and was unhappy with all of them.
I put one of their carpets in another car I was working on about six years ago
and it did not fit the hump in the floor, not even close. I would suggest you go with Year One.

Follow-up, bought carpet from Year One...made by ACC. Looks good, I'll be installing it this weekend.

Installed the carpet today, looks and fits great...better than the original!

I also found the build sheet under the drivers seat between the carpet and the tar insulation. Floor pans are like new, I also found a bunch of clips that must have been left under the carpet when the car was built, the clips have never been installed.

The build sheet is almost impossible to read due to the tar...has anybody done the laquer thinner trick to cleen the sheet? If so, what is the procedure?

Thanks,

Mike

put it in a shallow pan of laquer thinner and watch the tar disappear... I wrote the original thread on the procedure.

Every carpet set I have bought from Year One (at least 10+) has been ACC. I belive ACC is the only brand Year One has ever sold, not a 'perfect fit' but I guess the best available. My black one in my conv is starting to fade after 16 years and my aqua one is faded after about 10 years. Both cars are garaged with less than 2000 miles per year.

I have bought several from ames (ACC) and found that in the last few years they fit better than they used to, in earlier days they tended to be missing mat'l at the kick panels. one problem with the newer ones is there is so much extra mat'l front and sides that it is hard to know where it "belongs" for best fit, to bad they do not punch out the seat belt holes like the originals to take out the guess work (not to mention cutting through that damn underpadding is a royal pain). I noticed on the last set I bought that they asked if it was for an automatic or standard, due to shape change for the shifter porch I guess?

north, I had to specify auto or stick. The fit around the shifter porch is great...the carpet was about an inch to wide on each side which was easy to trim.
The under padding is like concrete to cut...amazing stuff.

68alpinebluegto, I found the write-up and it worked great.

Thanks,

Mike
