Default bop distributor gear question

I have a bop composite gear off my Mallory I sold. Can it be filled/drilled to fit the msd pro billet o just got .500 msd/.491 Mallory not much of a difference. Or is this a bad idea? Wanting to fire my car this weekend but will be next week until a new gear would show up

I figured someone has done it seems like .009 isn't much to take out could probably put sand paper on a rod and get that out in a few strokes

A flex hone is handy when stepping a hole up in size. You can sneak up on precise sizes when used carefully.

Just drill it real slow so that the bit does not heat up and expand on you!

If you are just looking to fire it up, why not just use the gear on new distributor for now??

I have heard from a few here that breaking it in on the steel gear will help to feather any sharp edges. Then install BOP gear once break in is done. Not recommending it but it is what I plan to do with my Stump Puller cam

I just switched from a Mallory to an MSD and didn't realize there was a difference in size till reading this. I swapped my composite gear onto the MSD without any problems. Does Mallory have 2 different sized shafts?

BOP makes a composite gear for either shaft diameter I believe.
You may have gotten a MSD part and put it on the mallory not thinking about the .0045" per side hole difference.

Most break-in the cam with a bronze gear during dyno runs and then swap in the composite gear once the sharp edges on the teeth of the cam gear are smoothed off a bit.

Not really that big of a deal to pull the distributor and change the gear after dyno runs.
Obviously change the oil at the same time. The filter will catch the trash from the assembly anyway (along with smome bits of brass from the worn brass gear).

I would not run a brass gear for any period of time on the street with a engine you care about.

This was a used cam so it already wore down a bit. Got it figured out though sold old gear already and new one will be here tomorrow. Just rather be safe than sorry. 10k new motor why risk something for a 125 part lol

Thanks guys

Used cam will be a "non issue" with the other new BOP gear install.

Have fun with your project.
