You can view a couple factory shop manuals for those early automatic transmissions on the http://www.pontiacsafari.com web page. Look in the 'Pontiac Garage' section, in particular there's one titled "The Hydramatic Transmission 1946-1955 On the Car Adjustment Service Manual".

Just as FYI, the 55 trans is not a Jetaway. It is a dual range hydramatic and does not have park position on shift quadrant. The Jetaway is a dual coupling trans and not the same. Regards RA.

1955 Pontiacs came with a DualRange Hydramatic. Did someone change yours to a Dual Coupling Hydramatic?
Yes, a sticking valve in the valvebody could cause that symptom. Also, a fault in the governor could cause it.

It sound like you have leaking seals in the rear clutch, which means it's overhaul time.
But, you can try some Lucas additive and see what happens as you have nothing to lose. I am very familiar with these transmissions

I have been driwing a litle bit in the car now.
Now the problem is only in fourth gear, it slips ore will not shift to fourth. when its hot, it driwes just as it should, and also kicksdown as it should. I will take of the pan and check all that i can from there, i hope i dont have to take it out of the car. I will try Lucas also. Thank you fore your soport guys. |

4th gear is the front and rear clutch. 3rd is the front clutch and the rear band so you have a rear clutch issue and the only way to fix it is to properly rebuild the transmission.
There is not much that you can do in the pan to rectify this issue.
