Default Windshield water stain removal

Not sure where to put this. Body maybe? Oh well. It will get seen here and people can laugh at my ineptitude.

My 50 year old windshield has some nasty hard water/acid raid stains. I’ve had some success before on a different car with white vinegar and 0000 steel wool but this windshield is having none of it. I went at it hard and those stains are just laughing at me.

I just bought a cheap glass polish kit that you use with a drill. Maybe I dented it a little? But it sure as hell isnt polished.

The glass is fine when you are driving in shade but man if you end up driving into the sun it’s downright dangerous. I need to fix it.

Any sure fire fixes for this? I was almost wondering if CLR would work. Open to suggestions.

No. I just bought some glass stove stop cleaner on a google suggestion. If that doesn’t work I’ll try a powered cleaner like that.

I’m thinking about going to buying a cheap air drill. I’m concerned about burning up my cordless.

You might try a little Lime-away bathroom cleaner. Also a clay bar can sometimes work.

Griots garage has a Windsheild clay....and their Speedy Shine as a lube...it’s worth a shot, before you get new glass.

I have used RainX Xtreme Cleaner with good success.

You may have to try CLR or Lime-a-way. Make sure you wet down your paint first and rinse any overspray immediately. Work it in with a green scotch rite pad and rinse thoroughly.

Are you sure the glass isn’t delaminating?

Yep, that was what I was thinking, moisture in between the layers.

Yeah, sounds more like a foggy layer, or maybe the glass is just sandblasted. Do you see the hard water spots/deposits even in the shade or otherwise out of direct sunlight?

I went through this recently with a car that I picked up that had MASSIVE hard water deposits on all the glass. I found these special kitchen scrubbing pads at the store, then mixed up some baking soda and CLR into a thick paste, then spread it on the glass. Fill a spray bottle with CLR and gently keep the paste wet with CLR. Let it soak a bit, maybe 20-30 minutes, then scrub it off with the scrub pad. I'll post a picture of what I used tomorrow. It took a lot of scrubbing, but it did come off.

I've never tried it but I've been hearing for decades that Coca-Cola is good for removing windshield haze and spots. Cheap to try..

I guess I’m not sure, but it looks more like a deposit to me.

What’s super irritating is when you rub it with glass cleaner it looks pristine for about 10 seconds until the cleaner flashes off then the haze comes back.

We had a truck at work that sat under a leaky water pipe. The stains on the glass were more rust than hard water spots. A rag soaked in Evapo-rust and left to sit on the spot for a couple hours, dissolved the stains away.

Also you can try this stuff "Spot-X" that worked well for my water spotted back window

"And they even used Bon Ami", sorry but a quote from one of my favorite movies.

Anyway, unless youre going for a concours resto. I think I would opt for new glass. Windshields really aren't that expensive. I bought mine installed for right around $200. I have tried over the years for deep cleaning glass with little success. Nothing makes a freshly restored car look worse than bad glass, like wise fresh glass will make a mediocre car look great!

In this case its about 500 just for the glass, not sure installed. So its worth it to me to try and repair, that said I am thinking about reaching out to local auto glass companies and see if they can polish it for me. At this point I would happily give someone $100 to save me the grief.

What kind of car is this? Even the windshield for the BMW I just picked up is under $200 just for the glass.. what kind of car takes a $500 windshield??

1964 Galaxie, probably just because its big and wrap around. I called a local glass company to get a quote but I'm guessing installed its going to be like $600. So you can see why I want to try and restore it.

Rock auto has the windshield by itself before shipping listed as $465

I’ll bet the glass from the early 60s GM bubble top cars are expensive too.

I'd definitely want to try to fix it before just replacing it as well.. I'm just surprised it's that expensive. That said, neither a local glass shop nor Rockauto would be places I would check first with a car like that, as if they can even get it, it will be chinese and crappy. Is it not available through any of the restoration parts houses?

That said, if it is in fact water/rust/calcium deposits, CLR and some scrubbing will take it off. It took a bunch of elbow grease on the car I was doing it on, but it did come off.

I did a quick google search and not much came up. I haven’t looked hard yet.

You know I did see that one with the green tint band. I’m not sure about that look. But that does make the replacement marginally more palatable.
