Flexplate to block shim
There's a spacer/shim that fits between the flexplate and block. What's it purpose and is it needed?

I've never used one, should be able to eliminate it all together.
Any adjustment between the crank flange and the flexplate can be done with starter shims. .

There's been multiple discussions about it over the years, and, I suspect there is some type of justification, but, it's just not rocket science, and it will not have any impact on an engine build.

LOL. Just reflecting on something I've heard. May not be a direct quote, " engineers do thing(s) for a reason ".

Yeah but sometimes those 'reasons' have no logical foundation! Heheh!

Shims are good to the correct spacing and proper engagement when re-installing a machined flywheel with manual trans . How about the flexplate reinforcement ring ?

As long as the flywheel was machined/turned within spec, there's no reason for a shim. If the flywheel, or ring gear, is out of spec, you replace the flywheel.
Flexplate reinforcement rings are worthless. SFI flexplates are like $85, just replace it. Pointless to go cheap. .
