June (6) 22, 1973, 1st shift. My '74s don't have the letter stamp also. There may have been more than 1 frame builder in the early stages.

I've used to think maybe the (1) and (2) might signify the division code, 1 for Chevrolet (camaro) and 2 for Pontiac (firebird). But, I have seen birds with a 1 enough times to believe I am wrong. I then thought they might be the shift (as Ransom suggests). Maybe so, or maybe they are codes for different suppliers. I know the N is not for Norwood, I have seen a bunch of Van Nuys cars with N subframes.

The S was probably for the A.O. Smith Co. Maybe Kurt S. or another Camaro guy knows another subframe supplier.

I'll add my numbers to this.
My Norwood 09A car has a frame stamp of 82670S2. August 26, 70. Just what you might expect for the date.
My Van Nuys 12B car has a frame stamp of 11671N2. January 16, 71. Seems odd, but my build sheet for this car shows an initial date in the upper left corner of 12-14 that was crossed out and a handwritten date of 1-25 right above it. And my PHS shows a shipped date of 01-29-71. For what ever reason this car seems to have been held up after it got its trim tag but before it went to final assembly.

Different vehicle but still GM. This could be the answer to the S1, S2, N, question.
MY 1964 Corvette with a Powerglide has the date stamped on the bottom of the oil pan. It is T1029N. Which I have learned through NCRS information sources to mean "T" Toledo 10 (Oct) 29th "N" Night shift. For this discussion S1, S2, & N Shift 1, Shift 2, & Night Shift. I have seen N used on other parts as a shift indicator.

So, they had S1, S2, N1 and N2 and that indicated 1st shift, 2nd shift, and nights and ????.

I think Mike is correct probably on the 'S' being the frame manufacturer, Smith in this case.
The number after the 'S' would be the shift.

oh - cool!
How did I never see this thread! I'll now have to crawl under my car to see what it shows... My car was monkeyed with, so hopefully it has the correct subframe!

I believe the S is for A.O. Smith frame works and 2 would be second shift.
Cannot remember who the N was for. I think Northern steel. Saw it in my GM parts interchange manual under frames and suspension section.

ok, I finally found my number;
Opinions on this one please! From another recent thread, it appears to be a 1970 subframe... If my interpretation of prior posts in this thread is correct, this looks to read as: May 28, 1970; Northern Steel; shift 2(?) May car's build date is 06A.

ok, my brother found this number on the passenger side rail on his '77 TA subframe;
He's interested in deciphering if it's original to the car, and worth keeping it vs swapping in one from a '78 donor Firebird: 20521N7 It appears as though little is known about these stamped frame date codes - which is probably why I had never heard of it... the closest I came to any sustancial information was a nastyz28 thread where the owner of an '80 posted a picture with a similar number sequencing... his ended in "0" which leads me to believe that the last digit of the year moved to the end when the date/source/shift information changed. help!
