Steering pump pulley
I have a 66 GTO, I’m having an issue with replacing the pulley on to the pump. The puller doesn’t work since there is no hollowed out threaded portion of the pump shaft . The pulley itself can’t be pressed on by hand enough to start the threads . I don’t want to bang it on either. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

Put it in a large bench vice.

Thanks for your response. What I have found on YouTube for this application, you slide it on until a few threads are exposed from the shaft. Then tighten down on the tapered-keyed shaft with the bolt. When removing it with the puller & with other types of pumps that have a hollowed out threaded pump shaft for adapting the puller , all the tension and force is isolated on the shaft & the centre of the pulley. My issue is getting the pulley far enough onto the shaft to get the nut started. I think if I tried to fabricate the use of a vise to force it on , I’d do some internal damage.

Two thoughts. First, examine the shaft, pulley, and key for any minor nicks or burrs. Doesn't take much to create resistance, deburr as necessary. Second, hot and cold. There are instances where warming something, or leaving it in the freezer overnight, makes a big difference. I'll yield to the folks with more experience on that, I'm a just-hit-it-harder kinda guy.

My 66 had a pulley that slid onto the shaft. Parallel shaft with a key way. Pulley held in place by a nut. Maybe your shaft or pulley boss has a burr?

Make sure the shaft is clean, and put the pulley out in the sun for an hour or heat it with a hair dryer before the install to expand it a bit so it'll go on easier.
