400 block damage pictures and cam question
Hello again everyone, I have a question I was hoping to get a few opinions on.
First, I recently acquired a 67 block with an XJ date code. The block itself seems to be in good shape with one exception. I have attached an image of damage on the rear of the block, near what I think is a thread for an oil pan bolt. Is this a deal breaker for this block? Is it repairable? Second quick question. The current motor in my car is a 68 400 originally out of what I believe to be a Catalina. It was a 2 barrel with #15 heads. I swapped out the intake and carb for an Edelbrock Performer and a Q-Jet. Now the car runs well but it's still lacking on a little power it seems. I've read that the heads aren't the greatest, but I'm investing in E-heads for a new build so I'm just sticking with these heads for the time being. But would a cam swap, to say a Summit 2801 provide any extra power? I appreciate any advice you could provide! |

The letters XJ are the block code. Sorry would not know if the hole is a deal breaker or not. I would suspect there is a fix available for it though.

I'm sorry, I meant block code. The date code is M226 if I recall without going to look at the block.

That hole is not a problem, as its not in a high stress area.
That is a location hole for machining of the block at the factory. Just to be safe grind it out so that its more round and has no sharp edges to it that will possible let a crack get started. The 2 bbl cam in the 68 400 is the bulk of your lack of power issue, and also whatever the basic condition is of a motor that old without a re-build.
