This seems to have been floating around for a while, seen it a few years back. Not sure anybody would be that Desperate to do this. Have done some questionable stuff when removing engine, but nothing like this.

When I first looked at the picture I thought to myself...Teenager me? Well, maybe... Just possibly... Until I got to the bottom of the picture. Holy crap, no way.

About 8 years ago I answered an ad for a free pontiac 400. The guy had swapped in an LS in his 67 lemans. We coordinated a pick up and I asked him if he had a picker he said resoundingly yes. I brought my buddies son for just a little help and he felt like going for a ride. I arrived and looked at the engine and said cool where-s the hoist. He said I have four sons. This guy was 6'5" or so and all four of his sons were about a year apart starting at 14 or 15 and built just like dad. They literally threw the 400 in my truck. Carb to pan with pulleys and an alternator. I said thank you I was on my way. So hoists/pickers come in alot of shapes and sizes.

Maybe when I was in high school
I really hope somebody staged this. If not, this is instant death.

I question if that is a real picture, only because it is hanging from a strap and the motor is perfectly level with the trans hanging off the back.

In high school my buddy called and ask for help. He had two items to put a 396 into his Chevelle and got stuck.

First was the old tri pod. Then the garage steel beam. Then I copied local Pontiac garages new wheeled engine lift. Made it to bolt together, slide in wheeled legs, etc. When I made it the steel was 'light' now in my 70s parts are heavy. It was always safe, complete 421 and long tail M40,boom at full extension,no problem.

I built my first hoist out of rusty old greenhouse pipe gas welded with coat hanger. Used a boat winch and cables, 19 or 20 years old at the time. Also used it to lift the body off the frame one end at a time.

In my youth I did pull a couple motors out using a big limb on a tree!

My dad built this gantry and died before he ever got to use it... the telephone pole to the left of it has pulled a few engines, though.

At my current house I have a very large black locust tree along the hedgerow between my backyard and the road. The base of the tree is roughly 4 feet in diameter. If you look up to one of the main branches you'll see a chain around the branch with about 4 feet of chain still hanging there, where I'm certain someone at one time had a chain fall hanging from that branch.
At some point in time they took the chain fall down, but left the chain still wrapped around that branch. I like to use an I beam with a trolley to pull engines, I'll be putting one up soon in one of the garages, since the former owners never had used the structure framework to lift anything up. Almost all of my former homes had I beams I installed in the garages. This one will likely have 2, I beams. |

I wasn’t that crazy in high school. My dad and my Uncle Bud would have had my guts for garters had I ever attempted something this fool hardy.
