Fill; you are going to have to locate a chassis manual, it contains an excellent front on view. I used it as reference during the rewire of my 65 this past winter. I will not be able to access my manual until late fall, sorry..

Fill, try this thread.
http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=486579 At post #2, picture taken from the Shop Manual I believe. Note where it shows "PONT. 4310 D", same pic is in my '64 Shop Manual. Might have used same pic in '65 Shop Manual, I don't know. Meanwhile photo at post #5 shows "PONT. 9804-A". Same as seen in the pic rare4k posted in this thread. These nos. are the last 4 digits of the full p/n of the connector, the letter may be a revision code. The '64 p/n is 2984310 for all T/6-T/8. For '65, the p/n is 2989804, also used for '66. I cannot check the original in my '64 GTO but I have a spare from a '64 Tempest that is marked "PONT. 4310-F" near as I could tell (didn't look like a "D" anyway). If you compare the two, there are a couple DIFFERENCES in the circuit and labels. So '65 was NOT identical to '64 but should be same as '66. Last edited by John V.; 04-24-2013 at 05:19 PM. |

John V. Thanks for he link. I see that rare4k picture has 9804-A fuse box and the wire harness label is 8104 TA that is the same on my car Carl A picture show a 9804-A fuse box with a harness label 8107 TD. I assume the numbers are the last four numbers of the part number and the TA and TD are the manifest codes? My car has rally gauges and Tach. Fill

Fill, the letters on the Instrument Panel Wire Harness being manifest coding is a good guess, probably so.
And yes, it looks like the nos. are the last 4 digits of the p/n. Here's what the Parts Catalog shows: p/n 2988104 '65 T/6 -T/8 Instrument Panel Wire Harness without A/C used with Man trans with or without Column Shift and Auto Trans with Column Shift. p/n 2988107 '65 T/6-T/8 Instrument Panel Wire Harness without A/C used with Auto Trans w/ Console (which means floor shift). There were also p/ns 2988105 (same apps as 8104 except with A/C) and 2988106 (same apps as 8107 except with A/C), I assume these would have been manifest codes TB and TC respectively. It looks like the Instrument Panel Wire Harnesses were selected without respect to the use of the Rally Gauge option or Tach. There is a separate Rally Gauge Cluster Wire Harness listed for the '65 T/8 as p/n 2989495. I interpret this as an additional Wire Harness to supplemnt the I.P. Wire Harness. In addition, I see a '65 T/8 Rally Cluster Jumper Coil Wire Assembly p/n 2989272. There was also a supplemental Wire Assembly p/n for the Tach. If I read this right, your I.P. Wire Harness would be 1 of the 4 I listed, depended on trans and A/C primarily. |

Looks as though rust is a common problem on these along with the lettering wearing off. Mine is rusted too. Anybody have suggestions about cleaning the rust from the fuse terminals?

If you compare the two, there are a couple DIFFERENCES in the circuit and labels. John: I believe that most of us '64 owners have the 4310 F boxes. I 'believe' that the F unit was used for non-AC equipped vehicles. goatman65 I was hoping someone was going to respond with a slick method of cleaning up these fuse boxes, and lost track of the thread. Although still a pain and time consuming, the following may help. Take lots of pictures and notes on where and how the fuse clips, plug receptors, and wires are positioned. Remove the fuses, checking that the correct fuses are in place. Remove the fuse clips and plugs. I use a 'smaller' needle nose pliars to disengage the locking ears at the base of the clips and plugs. Soak the clips and plugs overnight in a derusting solution (WD 40 supplies one and is available at some of your local auto stores). The derusting solution works best where the clips and plugs are severely deteriorated, as the clips and plugs were silver cadmium plated. The solution will not touch cadmium nor remove grease and grime from cadmium. Typically, the clips and plugs will retain some of the cadmium plating. Where this occurs, get out your Dremmel kit, and polish. Coat with a light film of di-electric grease, and reassemble. Hope this helps. |
