Thumbs up Smoke Signals

...I see there is a brief mention of this over in the lobby, but thought I'd post it here anyway.....just got the April issue of Smoke Signals today; shout out the member Mike Noun for his article on the 1970 Firebird Pilot Cars. i just took a few quick photos, but maybe someone else who has it can scan and/or enlarge it that would be great, I can't do either thru my handheld right now...looks to have some cool little factoids and tidbits along with some rare photos and other info...happy reading and thanks Mike!

Great article - nice job, Mike!

I thought it was interesting that the way they spec'd out the pilot cars included some options or option combinations that ended up not being available in production. For example the first Trans Am has Ram Air IV, Close Ratio trans, and 3.90 axle, when for production 3.73 was the steepest gear and all 4-speed RA IVs came only with the wide ratio trans.

The Formula was spec'd with the 3.90s, too.

The Esprit was spec'd with a power drivers seat (not available in production).

And the second Trans Am had a Ram Air III, Close Ratio trans, 3.55 gears, and a hood tach. Hood tach was not available in production, and the close ratio trans mandated 3.73 gears.

It's interesting to me that so close to the start of production, they obviously still hadn't nailed down the finals specs.

Does anyone know if any of these cars still exist?

wow!

I have an issue of SS that hasn't been opened yet;
I have noticed that some have gone missing on route to my residence (I don't know if it's the mail sorters fault or not, but I'm not going to make a stink to POCI about it) - really hope I have this one!
