Kent, 1.65 rocker arms will require you to enlarge the pushrod passages in the heads since the fulcrum distance is moved towards the stud (closer). I would go with a cam swap myself (2802 or equivalent). Get the Hy-Lyft Johnson lifters that Paul Kippen carries, I believe. You can still use your 1.50 rockers with that cam, but you'll also need to install stronger 7/16" studs and poly-locks to adjust the lash. You would need to do the same thing with the 1.65 rocker arms.

Glad to hear new RA manifolds and Pypes exhaust are working for you.

Dennis

Has that cam changed? Summit has it as 298/303. The pontiacpower cam list online says 282/292. Both at 224/234.

I'm sure they are the same cam. That core is sold by almost every cam dealer, but the Summit version is the least cost...usually. You'll see that the seat numbers vary a bit from supplier to supplier to make it look unique, like a special grind.

I forgot to mention that going to the 2802 cam, or any aftermarket cam with greater than .450" lift, you'll need new valve springs to accommodate the higher lift (120# seat pressure/280# open is plenty).

Do you like the R or just the standard Johnson Hy-Lyft?

Kent, we typically just buy the standard 'S' lifters and 'zero' lash/adjust them (1/4 turn past no movement up/down in the pushrod cold) with polylocks or crimp nuts. The 'R' is the quicker bleed down lifter ala' Rhoades, so noisy.

Thanks Dennis.

Stupid questions,

When adjusting the lash do you need to have valve being adjusted closed?

Should the new lifters have run a bit to get oil into them or does that matter?

Been a while since I did this!

For a new cam & lifters you need to follow break-in procedure: you should apply the moly lube past on the cam lobes & lifters, adjust each lifter when it is on the base circle (so valves are closed), reapply moly lube after lifter adjustment, set #1 to TDC, prime your oiling system with the distributor out with a drill and priming tool to fit on the oil pump drive shaft (counterclockwise rotation), reinstall distributor to #1 with 12 degrees advance on the timing marker.

Got a chance to run with the drag radials today. Picked up .4-.5!

Quite a gain, broke well into the upper 13s.

Thanks guys. Basically tied with the Mach E now! Might need to go to the strip next summer to settle it.

Hey KSZR, I just noticed this thread.
So I’m not clear, did you end up doing a cam swap or no?
Congratulations on the 13’s.

No, still running the 068. Thanks for your input on the tires!

Mickey Thompson drag radials on some old spare honeycombs.

13.87 was the best of 2 runs.

What was your MPH and engine RPM at the end?

Put the wing back on in black. And some 70.5 stripes to match it and the interior.

Thanks!

The car has been evolving since I started on it in high school.

Fun to change and improve what I want, while trying to stay true to it being a Pontiac!
