Aftermarket Tomahawk valley plan.

I had thought about notching the washers because it's less visible. Let me see how much needs to come off and make a call.

The last one I did I used a round stone on a drill, that had a flat face. It was just slightly larger than the washer. I walked it back & forth over the edge, if you can imagine that.

I know OE valley pans need doctoring, will have to look and see if my Tomahawk was doctored or not. Some reason I'm thinking no, but it's been a while.

my Tomahawk needed massaging in some of the corners.

I needed to remove about .10 from the crossover, so I busted out the trusty Dewalt cordless die grinder with a carbide bit. I picked this tool up to port the intake and it's come in handy so many times including clearance the block. Multi-speed trigger with a switch to toggle between three max RPMs. Highly recommended and everything sits nice and level now.

Other than the intake ports, I'm not seeing any other place the valley pan needs some massaging. When the pushrods get here, I think I'll be good to button this thing up. There's a machine shop with a Superflow dyno down the road. Thinking about seeing what it puts out before I drop it in the car.

New pushrods received. They fit like a glove. Adjusted the valves and primed the engine while rotating the crank. I saw plenty of oil getting around so my son and I proceeded to put the distributor, valley pan and intake on. I got to teach him about the firing order and how a distributor works and had him wire up the plugs. I tried to get the timing as close to start up advance when I put the distributor in. We'll see how good I am.

It sure looks good on the stand all shiny and dressed up. Reminds me of the scene from Spinal Tap with the guitar on the stand that's never been played.

Nigel Tufnel: The sustain, listen to it.
Marty DiBergi:I don't hear anything.
Nigel Tufnel: Well you would though, if it were playing.

The local shop with the Superflow only dynos their own builds. Called around and couldn't find a dyno that was within a distance I wanted to travel, so I made the executive decision to drop it in this weekend. Maybe I'll circle back with a chassis dyno after we get it installed. Wish us luck!

Nearly 12 hours of wrenching and it's just about ready to put fluids in and fire up.

I didn't check that the converter was fully seated which prevented the first attempt at placing the engine. Once I got that solved, the Ames motor mounts fought me for a little bit. Nothing a little pry bar couldn't fix. Looks good.

Fired it up this afternoon! It was probably the most smooth new engine fire up I've had, knock on wood. Basically turned the key and off it went.

Broke it in according to Butler's instructions. Oil pressure looks good, temps stayed low, vacuum is steady. Minimal leaks to contend with.- just a small fuel leak at the carb and a power steering overflow. Hopefully it stays this trouble free! A little bit of sewing machine noise from the lifters at idle, but not too bad. Idle is pretty mellow and smooth thanks to the 114.

The gen light stays lit all the time, even when the car is off. That's new. Could be the new engine harness or the new Powermaster mini starter. If that's my biggest issue, I'm ok with that!

Throttle blip in driveway left a couple of patches. If that's any indication, this is going to be a fun engine.

Looks and sounds fantastic! What lifters do you have? They don't sound too loud in the video.

Johnson lifters. They're really not bad at all, I only hear them at idle. I'm pleasantly surprised by how easy this thing fired off! I haven't drained the break in oil yet so I hope I'm not jinxing myself.

Are they the short travel Johnsons? That's what I have and I think they're pretty quite.

Correction, mine are the "reduced" travel, .093.

These are the regular ones. I can also check my preload. I went pretty conservative on them erring towards 1/8 turn.

I looked at both Butler and Comp roller break in instructions, as well as some others, and they were pretty much the same as a flat tappet so I kept with that.

Initial fire up instructions: https://butlerperformance.com/file/3...+Procedure.pdf

Cam break in: https://butlerperformance.com/file/1...t+Break+In.bin

Before you take it out again, be sure to wipe my drool off of the pics you posted, haha. Beautiful and congrats on the smooth fire up! It’s nice when things go right huh?!

That’s the idea! Rear end is a ‘69 XH 3.55 posi. We’ll see if it lasts!

Drained the oil from break in last night. There was negligible bit of sediment on the drain plug which was nice to see. I did see some flecks when I drained the oil filter. Nothing uncommon for a new build but I'm glad I changed the oil immediately. Per Butler's instructions I put a fresh batch of Driven BR 15/50 in.

It's very angry on a cold start, but once it warms up a bit it idles smoothly and stays cool with the 160 degree thermostat. Oil pressure is where it should be. Looks like it's around 70psi which is perfect considering I added the shim in the oil pump for a little more pressure. Props to Ray Klemm for the awesome job on the carb. Only minor adjustments to idle speed needed! The new trans was thirsty. I think I ended up putting in about 11 quarts or so. It may want more when I'm able to take it out for a drive.

I accidentally debugged the perpetual GEN light as well. I was on the phone with M&H for a while and we were both perplexed. I noticed I was getting power to two wires at the voltage regulator when the car was off. I went to remove the bulkhead to check for power and continuity and noticed the offending wire lost power when I backed the bolt out of the bulkhead a few turns. Problem solved!

I still need to get the underside of the hood prepped and painted, the rain has been preventing that. After that, it needs an alignment and the A/C reinstalled and charged. My son is already bugging me to take to open shop night at his school.
