My 70 has a black tilt column that is original to the car and is black also, and yes it was an original formula wheel car. Wheel is stashed away in my closet already done. Here is a pic of some sandlewood door panels painted white in the 70’s that I’m trying to save. Slow process but they are turning out VERY nicely.

Unfortunately, the interior still looks the same as I have had this car for over 15 years and have not restored it yet.

Dash and console, I/we feel that the paint actually saved and preserved the original color thankfully

That's an impressive save! Agreed - the paint probably blocked a good portion of the UV rays that eat these things up.

What are you using to remove the paint?

Sorry to the OP, I didn't intend to derail his thread just simply post some pics of the Sandlewood differences (although I am not convinced my dash isn't saddle but some other time on that)

It has CERTAINLY been a labor of love trying to save these original pieces. My wife has a BUNCH of pics she is saving for a blog or thread on the build of this formula. The whole Interior was painted/dyed white in the mid 70's. As stated before we believe however this actually saved/preserved the original coloring. I have over 30 hours easily in what's been done so far. The hardest by far is getting it out of the stitching and the WORST is out of the comfortweave material. I am using a citrus based cleaner. I spray it on let it sit then scrub it vigorously with a toothbrush. Then after a bunch of cycles i spray it with dawn dish soap and water heavily til its dripping wet and wipe it down to make sure any of the cleaner is completely washed off, diluted or neutralized so it doesn't cause the material to dry out or crack. The dash took awhile and the door panels are proving challenging. I need to remove the armrests so I can get underneath and clean also. I have grown quite fond of this color of interior quite frankly and am excited to see it saved and put it into the Lucerne blue ram air formula at some point.

I did practice this on another interior that was painted with equally as nice of results but it was already cracked etc. I did that to see how the material would react to various chemicals over time etc. the stuff I did like I am doing now has sat outside in the sun for over a year and hasn't gotten any worse. Just wanted to clarify that for anyone wondering. Hate to have spent what's gonna equate to a month of work just to have the dash dry out and crack in six moths.

Default Interior material

Im.not sure if the nos material is same color as original interior but I imagine it's close and new. I got samples of deluex comfort weave material from a supplier for my dark saddle and just dast or dash restoration van match original 70 texture. My dad told me not to.patch up car. It's a little expensive but should look great when done. I imagine the interior will get sun Fading too. My time is limited and don't have time to scrub stuff. It's old and new is better I think. I do like the combination of dark saddle dash with light saddle seats. My seats were perfect but sun tore up the stiching and expanded the foam.

Maybe it's just the lighting or the picture, but your trim looks more like brown than saddle. What's the trim code on your trim tag?

Mikes Reply:
I made the mistake on my first interior die job on a 1981 Camaro with the Red Interior and I preped the interior parts and died them, but I did not clear it, big mistake, parts faded in one year and I lost all that work to "not" reading the instructions. I used the SEM materials on the Carpet, Seats, Dash, side panels, package Tray, trim and Console. The SEM colors are matched as best as anyone can do. The next time I died my 1979 Pontiac Black over Black, I first used their prep. solution that cleans the vinyl material and alows the die to adhere to the material. Then I died the material with a couple of coats, as per directions, this time and then cleared with low luster clear, you have a choice of Mat or Gloss finish. Some places you want low luster and some places like the dash you want Mat finish, it is up to you. If you are interested in the actual factory brochure photos, I have seen them online. I can search through my archives on my computer if you can't find it online yourself, let me know, Mike out.

Yes, these photos match the sandlewood interior that is in my 1970. There are three colors involved, the vinyl on the seats and doors, the carpet, and the dashboard cover.
