Default Location for engine oil temp sensor?

I'm installing an AutoMeter trans temp and engine oil temp gauge under my dash above the console.

Where on the engine block can I put the engine oil temp sensor? It's just a standard 3/8" sensor. Is there a plug on a 1969 XH code block somewhere that touches the oil galley aside from just the stock pressure sensor?

Lots and Lots of posts on using the location next to the distributor for the oil pressure and oil temperature. The stock pressure sensor is located in the oil filter adaptor on the passenger side rear of the block. Most times it turns on a idiot light.

You want to remove the square hear female plug on the top of the block (next to the distributor and use a brass tee screwed into the block.

In the TEE which is turned 90 degrees so that the vertical part of a normal "T" is now at 9:00 and pointed towards the brake booster is where you install the mechanical oil pressure gage line or electric sensor for the oil gage.

The Left leg of the "T" will point upward and that is where you install your oil temp sensor.

The right leg of the "T" will have a male thread that screws into the oil passage thread in the block. (where you removed the factory plug). If you can't find a female/female/male
fitting just use a double male thread fitting and screw that into the block and female "T".

That should be clear as mud now (LOL).

Use a bendable steel brake line is you use a mechanical oil pressure gage.
With electric gages, no line required. Copper gage lines have been known to leak/fail and get oil all over the carpet.

Hmm, I'll have to see where my Dakota Digital pressure sensor is now. I have a remote oil filter so I'm not sure if it would still be in the filter housing.

I'll look into it, thanks for the info! I can visualize what you are describing far as the T adapter by the distributor.

I've welded a 1/2" NPT 1/2 coupler bung into the LR (Driver's Side) lower rear corner of the oil pan for my oil temp. gauge on my last 3 oil pans. Seems to have worked just fine to this point. Trans. temp ….welded a 1/2" NPT 1/2 coupler bung into the last 2 Trans. pans...seems to have worked fine as well.

I welded a bung into my trans pan for its temp sensor too. Perhaps I'll do that for the oil as well.

The Bung in the oil pan is the best location but may not be that easy to accomplish without effort. On a "A-Body" vehicle, unless it is a drag car, you can't take the oil pan off to weld the bung on easily.

Engines with oil drain lines from the Boosting devices: (Vortech & Paxton Superchargers
and all Turbochargers) all use either Bungs on the oil pan or ways to add the oil to the timing cover oil side (like thru a unused Mechanical Fuel Pump mounting location.

Again, works well when the engine is being built and the oil pan is off and easy to modify. The "T" fitting will read the liquid oil just fine too. In a remote filter housing is fine as another option.
