Default What is the best year gto?

What do you think is the greatest year. You can go with 1st gen, 2nd gen or by years. I like the 66-67 years

I'm going with 64-65...they just have the most muscular look to me. Minimalist design, nothing there thats not needed.

My 2 cents

They're all great, but I'm partial to the '68-72 group.

I'm kinda partial to the 64 But I could be bias on this issue. LOL. 67 is also a nice design year, But then again, 64 to 67 are all nice.

for handling, in stock form, it's probably a 73.

for mod's i'd say a 74, all the bird parts fit and that car lightens up quick.

for looks i'm parts to several of the vintage years.

i'll drive any of the vintage ones, i've not warmed up at all to the new generation's looks yet.

Ditto........the '73 and '74 are nothing alike. The '74 was similar to a Nova. Im not really a GTO kind of guy but I like both the '73 and the '74.

Yeah, that is what I meant. I had a friend in High School that had a Blue 1974 Pontiac Ventura. It was really nice, but I went out with a girl who had a father that drove a '67 GTO. That made me drool

You hit the nail on the head with the Chevelles. They just don't have that oomph

I'm fondest of the '66 & have owned 5 of them (still have 2). While there is not a lot of difference between the '66 & '67 (I've owned 1 '67), there are just a few things about a '66 that I like better. The '66 was the best selling GTO & also the best selling Muscle Car period. The '66 still had solid metal window cranks, a dash pad that goes all the way to the windshield & of course was the last year for "three deuces and a four speed & a 389". The exterior differences between the '66 & '67 are minor & it's just a matter of personal taste which look people like better. All you '67 fans, don't get me wrong. The '67 is my second favorite year & if you want an automatic, it's a better car. The one automatic '66 I had, I swapped in a turbo 400 & a his & hers shifter. Just my $.02 worth.

I would have to say the 67. I just love the front and the back of it. The lines are so sleek and the car has a muscular stance. It is funny how tastes change over the years. When I first got into GTO's I would not look at anything else but a 65 which was my favorite then. I actually did not even like the 66-67, I thought it looked too big. Now that I have a 67, it just seems so much nicer. Even my wife and neighbors say they like the 67 better than my 65. They said the 67 looks so much more muscular and curvy.
In my opinion, the only reason why the 66 was the best selling year for the GTO was because it did not have the stiff competition which became available in 67. The Camaro and Mustang/fastbacks became a killer in the sales department in 67 which took away a lot of the 67 GTO's glory. The 66 and down Mustang was considered a girls car back then where I came from in the Bronx anyway.. To end, I like all the GTO's, they are each unique in there own way, even the 04 to 06 which I would give the best bang for the buck award to as well as being a great sleeper. Hey at least they were not made in Japan right..

I always have and always will like the 66 the best. Coke bottle shape and not all the chrome and safety stuff that the 67 had. Just cant beat those stacked headlights.

They can all be made to look like a car that Id like to own though.

Road in Jim Sylvesters 64 389 quad automatic in high school. Another friends brother drove the 65 Wild Hawaian{custom paint} go fast car at Detroit Dragway. Tim Colein bought a 66 bergundy 389 quad,4 speed. Later built and modified by Dick Jesse racing enterprises,{Now it was fast}. Johnny Clinton wrapped his 66 around a telephone pole and the Insurance Co. bought him a 67 experimental 405hp from ACE Wilsons Royal Pontiac in Royal Oak Mich. Can't remember this guy's name but he got a red/white 67 GTO convertable 400 4bbl auto for graduation and he traded it in on for a TR6. Tim and I were cruising Woodward and came up on a 67 Blk/Blk Gto, and tried to convince him to run . He said it wouldn"t be fair. After some conversation we found that he just pulled his brand new 400 and installed a 427/425 hp chevy. Bigger was always better in those days. Love the 64's 66's are fun partial to the refined ultimate 67 GTO. My wife bought me a blk/blu 67 455 auto 6 yrs ago and it's still my favorite. chaz069
